Description After taking a focused course on Surrealist history (while at the same time reading 2-3 comics per week) my work has finally shaped into a more consistent, cohesive organism.

This is one of the first prints I made while learning about the Surrealists and their processes. It originated through the Surrealist practice of 'automatic drawing' or 'automatism'. In short, this means that one suppresses their conscious mind to let the subconscious have more control of what's created.

For me this meant that after drawing the panel layout (without knowing what would go in the panels) I scribbled lines around for a minute or two. Then I would look at the scribbles and let my subconscious decide what I was seeing; similar to a Rorschach Ink Blot Test. Finally I would refine the lines so that others could see what I saw.

haha, thanks. My next goal would be to impress Rene Magritte. That guy is my visual artist hero.

Thank you!

I've refined my process a bit since this one and shall be posting those over the upcoming months.Β

The thing about this print I wasn't content with was that it's just a bunch of visual gibberish. There's no perceived meaning or united threads to ground the viewer.
I resolved that in later prints by striking a balance between subconscious content and conscious editing to form a somewhat sequential narrative (though still very bizarre).

Awesome! I particularly enjoy the top panel, but they're all good! Love the idea of letting the subconscious decide too

Thanks! Also,Β It helps eliminate 'writers block' syndrome 'cause the subconscious is so full of content to draw from.Β
