My late grandmother was a flapper. She wore short dresses, cloche hats, and was what they used to term "wild." At sixteen she became pregnant with my aunt, and my grandpa, a year younger, married her after my great-grandma kicked her out of the house. They lived with his parents for a time until they started their own farm.

It wasn't a story she would tell. For fifty years they never told anyone when their anniversary was. Finally, on the 50th they caved in and everybody began counting on their fingers, so to speak.

I love her story. She took most of it to the grave with her, but Mom passed along what she knew of it.

Hard to believe the sweet older woman I knew was such a hussy in her teens!
