I came up with this last night after seeing lots of similar methods. I haven't used it to create any actual HARPG horses yet but I've been doing lots of trial runs and getting realistic results. I designed this for stock-type horses and their colors/disciplines, but this can easily be modified for other types of horses... i.e. changing color frequencies, changing abilities to racing distances instead of cow sense, and anything else you see fit to your stable.

This is most appropriate for foundation horses with no previous parental influence, but if you wish to use it for lined horses you of course can do that.

Go to random.org and select the random number generator. Set the parameters 1-100. Generate a number for each part of each step to create your horse.

Step 1: Sex
If you draw 1-50, your horse is a colt.
If you draw 51-100, your horse is a filly.

Step 2: Height
Roll a number for the main height category, and then use the actual number itself to determine the specific height. (i.e. if you roll a 23, that puts your horse on the upper end of small, so it would be about 14.2 hh.)
NOTE: This is set for stock-type horses-- feel free to adjust for breed standards.
1-25: Small (13.3-14.2 hh)
26-75: Average (14.3-16.0 hh)
76-100: Large (16.1-17.0 hh)

Step 3: Conformation / Physical Characteristics
There's a few parts to this one so be careful not to skip any.
A. Conformation
1-20: Below average conformation. May have flaws that inihibit high-level performance.
21-45: Average conformation. Funcitonal but not exceptional.
46-80: Above average conformation. Considered correct but maybe not perfect.
81-100: Ideal conformation by breed standard.

B. Build
1-33: Stocky build.
34-66: Average build.
67-100: Lean build.

C. Eye Appeal
1-20: Homely. This horse isn't your definition of pretty-- it may have an ugly eye, roman nose, etc.
21-55: Average. This horse is rather plain but not ugly.
56-75: Attractive. This horse is typically pretty, turns a few heads.
76-100: Exceptional. This horse captures the attention of everyone with its physical beauty.

Step 4: Temperament
1-15: Poor. Intractable, hot-headed, maybe just plain mean... take your pick.
16-30: Fair. Not as mean as the previous but still far from being considered a specimen of temperament.
31-50: Average. A step up from fair.
51-65: Good. Maybe has a few vices.
66-80: Great. Almost a perfect disposition.
81-100: Exceptional. You could trust your life to this horse.

Step 5: Abilities
***It's important to note that you can absolutely adjust this to your type of horses. Replace cow and reining ability with breaking speed and heart if you're a racing stable, or perhaps suspension and extension if you are making a dressage horse.***

Also, if you get a horse that is completely devoid of any talent, you can reroll to get at least one strength.

A. Cow Sense
1-25: Poor. No aptitide in this area at all.
26-75: Average. This horse can perform in this discipline and possibly have a sucessful career (maybe not at champion levels) under the right tutelage.
76-90: Good. This horse can definitely win in competitions using this ability and can compete at a high level.
91-100: Exceptional. This horse has a rare amount of talent in this area and that will surely take it to the highest levels of competition.

B. Movement

C. Agility / Reining Ability

D. Speed

D. Stamina

Seems good but I lost all my interest and left when having a roman nose was placed on the 'ugly section'.

Thanks! There are many ways to adapt it for different stables as well, so I think people would really like it if it were better known. Feel free to spread the word

Buckpasser In reply to jiggles1234 [2010-07-02 00:09:01 +0000 UTC]

HARPG stands for #HorseArt-RPG -- it's a sort of rpg where players draw fictional horses for breeding and competition. Some players like me prefer to be as realistic as possible, but others prefer a more fantasy approach. There's something in it for every taste and skill level

Thanks a bunch! I've posted it on *JNFerrigno 's generators journal but she hasn't updated it in a while. I'll post it on the HAPRG wall, and if you could spread the word that would be great

Roman nosed isn't a bad thing.

To some it is

I personally like it on some breeds, but on others it doesn't fit.

Syra-Syra In reply to Buckpasser [2010-06-18 20:46:14 +0000 UTC]

Mmhm, I guess you're right...
Still, from my view shouldn't be seen as bad conformation When I think of 'bad' I think of ewe-necked, coffin headed, roach backed ect ect. Flaws which actually effect the build of a horse in everyday life and events such as dressage... not really just a simple roman nose, they are beautiful

Buckpasser In reply to Syra-Syra [2010-06-18 20:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Yup. I love a noble arched profile on an Andalusian or draft horse

I meant for the "eye appeal" section to be traits that don't affect the horse's functional conformation much but do influence its purely aesthetic value. So I guess it would be up to the individual to decide what's ugly or not for their breed of horse.

Syra-Syra In reply to Buckpasser [2010-06-18 20:58:22 +0000 UTC]

Eh, suppose I can't really argue with a point like that. I'm not one to call a horse 'ugly' or 'beautiful' for various reasons, we should appreciate the 'imperfections' because that it what makes them unique and to compare and contrast with others only causes bitterness and hatred.
Prehaps I'm just batty
