I sighed walking downstairs; recently I’d begun to live here with my real father. “Hey kid” Keahi said sitting on my shoulder, just a few days ago I learned the term for him, he was a sacred Japanese kitsune. I yawned and smiled, “Hey.” Walking into the kitchen I noticed Flash sat on the floor asleep, Dad was at the table drinking who knows what. “Morning.” I mumbled walking to the cabinets. By now you should know, my name was Mason Reeves, I live with my dad and his cat Flash. As well as my partner Keahi. Recently I had found a letter at our house while moving my stuff, mom wanted me to keep this strange rod, since then it was a necklace I wore every day. “….going?” I glanced at Dad, “Sorry what’d you say?” Frowning he repeated it slower, it mad me feel stupid, but who cared. “Are you going?” He gestured to the clock and I sighed, time to meet my friends, it’d been forever since I saw my little sister Abeni we wrote every day, but it was nothing. Sighing I grabbed my books and went to the door, “You’re going to see her?” Dad asked looking at me I didn’t meet his gaze, “Maybe.” “I don’t want you going near her.” “I don’t care” I replied going to leave something shot past my face inches from hitting me. I didn’t need to look to know what it was dad.

He had once sliced a bad cut on my cheek from knives, quickly I left and Flash followed. What I was saying, I’m Mason Reeves, exactly 16 and a half. My half sister is Abeni, she’s really nice and I feel bad for her. My mother is Zaruyia; she died from an attack when I was little. For most of my life I’d gone with whatever people told me to do. Now I’m completely on my own. “Mason!” I glanced at Abeni who stood with Gavin and I waved at them. The two were holding hands, much as I’d seen them to various times in pictures. I wasn’t too worried, if they started dating I’d be, but now they were just friends. “Hey how are you?” she asked and I shrugged, “Same old same old.” “You’ve grown, you’re inches taller then me!” Abeni said smiling I laughed, “Yeah I guess so.” I would spend hours, if it were possible, just hanging out with her.

We’d seen hardly any of one another, but that was because my refusal to go near the jerk of an alien, Metro. I glanced around my gaze landing on someone I never thought in my life I would think of as beautiful. She stood at a flower cart talking to the man, she wore a short dress that looked as if it tied around her neck and had long dark hair that was pulled up in a ponytail. I stood at the side of a building watching her, completely ignoring my sister and Gavin. I was peeking out from behind the building Keahi on my shoulder. “Slipping…..slipping…..Slipping!!!” the last time I heard Keahi and noticed he slipped from my shoulder and hit the ground Abeni picked him up and glanced at where I’d been looking, “Oh hey its Misty.” “Misty?” I asked glancing back at her. The name suited her, that long shinny black hair, I now noticed the brown tinted points in the back. “Yeah, Misty, you know Mocha and Blitz’s daughter.” Gavin said.

I frowned, I knew Mocha and Blitz, but what I knew was they never visited, EVER. “Great” I mumbled, “What’s wrong?” “Do you know what she is!?” I snapped, “Yeah, a girl.” Abeni said frowning. I rolled my eyes and leaned against the building, “Not just a girl. She’s a guardian.” “Point?” Gavin asked I noticed he was walking over to her and Abeni dragged me over smiling, “Hey Misty!” “Huh? Oh hey.” She said smiling and and I noticed quickly the intricate bracelet that was woven around her right wrist. “Where’d you get that?” “Oh a gift from my dad, he said it’d help protect me here.” I smiled, “Cool.” “Abeni, Gavin it’s nice to see you again. Whose this?” She asked, I should have been hurt that she didn’t know me, but I wasn’t. “ “That’s my brother, Mason.” Abeni said smiling. I nodded and heard someone spinning around I glared when I saw the people I was avoiding, “Hey I got to go.” I said taking Keahi from Abeni and walking away.

I really didn’t know why I was avoiding Metro. Maybe because he’d abandoned my family, maybe because he blames me for my mom’s death, or maybe because I’m exactly like him and I don’t want to be. “Mason!” Abeni shouted behind me I glanced back to see her run over I didn’t look at Metro, but somehow I knew he was somewhat shocked. As far as everyone knew, I had died. I disappeared without a sign of my existence. All my stuff were gone, my room was pretty much desolate except for the bed, dresser, bookshelf, blankets, and the closet. “Yeah?” I asked mostly to myself till Abeni hugged me, “Seriously, you’re a dork.” She said and smiled, “I miss you brother.” It was probably the first, and last time I’d ever hear her call me brother. Somehow I knew dad would show up, he knows he didn’t win our earlier disagreement, he’s show up anyway. “I know.” I replied and stepped back Keahi nodded, “Take care kiddo.” “Hey I’m not a kiddo!!” “You’re what, fourteen? Fifteen?” “……good point.” Abeni mumbled, “Hey wait, how old are you?” I asked confused, “Mason!! That’s terrible you don’t even know your sisters own age!!” “Half sister” I corrected smiling.

I noticed the others walked over by now, “and no I don’t know your age.” “She’s fourteen, just turned fourteen like when? Last week?” Misty asked and Abeni nodded, “Last Tuesday.” “….really that recent? …dang I got to pay more attention to things like that, well happy late birthday.” “Mason you are a dork!” Abeni said laughing I frowned when my cell phone rang and I pulled it out looking at a text from dad. “What is it?” Abeni asked and Misty took my phone reading the text aloud, “Better not be ditching school, I got the report card and you do realize its not possible to make bellow an F right?” Misty and Abeni laughed, “Dude what did you make!?” “…lets just say they made a new grade level for me with math.” I mumbled and took my phone back, “I got to go, knowing my crazy situation I’m going to be looking at an hour of nonstop math cramming.” I said and Abeni laughed hugging me again, “Alright then see you later.”
