I've been using coldpress 140 lb rough surface paper and a friend from the urban sketching group was telling me he only uses smooth hotpress paper for his pen to roll easily. I suddenly realized that might be my problem with putting gouache onto the uneven surface. So today I tried out smooth paper and it really was so much easier to apply and mix the paint onto the paper.Today's live portrait session
