Description This is a design of Celtic spirals and knotwork arranged around four decorative eagles; the spirals in their wings are based on a traditional pattern that I saw in George Bain's " Celtic Interlace"; I worked them into my eagles' wings when I painted and animated them for a digital illustrated version of Lord Dunsany's short story " Charon", for an Amiga demo contest back in 1988. A simpler version of the animated eagle is part of the free Celtic clip art collection at my web site.

Here I repainted the eagles at a much higher resolution for use in print, and framed them with additional patterns.

That's amazing work. When and how did you start learning Celtic knots? This one really amazes me.

I found a copy of George Bain's book on Celtic art in 1979, just before I packed all my things and went to Europe for a few months, so the book was waiting for me when I got back. That was almost the only reference book you could find in those days, apart from books that just had plates of some of the designs. I did an awful lot knotwork back in the 80's, and I don't do so much any more. It's just someplace I know that I like to go back and visit every now and then.

Hey, I'm working on it .
But after a few more days I probably won't have much new for quite awhile, at the rate I get these done. Though I might throw soem WIPs out there; I haven't done that before, but it's an interesting idea.
Oh, and I'm still trying to decide what to call the legions of Robokatt, unless possibly I use "The Legions of Robokatt" .

Thanks! I've just been trying to look at your deviations but they're not loading for me right now. I did notice (since all I could do was *read* for the moment) that you were bored in your art history class and I think that's a dirty shame; I was really lucky in getting a great, smart, funny art history teacher when I was in school, and it was one of the best classes I had. Bob Pelfrey, wherever he is - he was a little gnome of a guy with a sort of bump right on the top of his head. I wish you could have gotten someone like him so you could also hear what a lousy marriage Andrea Mantegna had and why he stayed up all night figuring out how perspective works, or how one of Raphael's patrons couldn't figure out why his frescoes weren't getting done till he learned that Raphael had a new girlfriend back in the city; to get his paintings finished he had to ship the girl out to his estate so she'd be nearby. Bob was first rate.

Any kind of history is really about people, and there's no excuse for making that boring.

oh dont get me wrong i love art history... we just have some really stupid people in my class, but you take the good with the bad, and when he is answering their pointless questions i doodle.... but i do love my eduation.... where did you attend school?

Hey, that's a relief. I do remember in the first class that Bob asked who could tell him what the Renaissance was, and I was the only one who'd ever heard of it before. But he sure got them interested as he went along .

I'm mostly School of Hard Knocks. The only college I had was in a little community college near San Luis Obispo, California, which luckily had a really great art department.

So I finally realized it was only the thumbnails that weren't coming in for me, and now I see your drawings, which I like. I'm always interested in inks, especially.

And of course I liked your Rufus right away, but then, I would, wouldn't I?
