With the split between the Catholic and Protestant cantons the Sonderbund war broke out. The Sonderbund sought French interference, which the French accepted, seeing having an ally in the region useful as their rivalry against Austria continued.
With the entrance of France into the war, many in the Jura region of Bern revolted against the protestant canton. The occupied lands of Jura were briefly united with Neuchatel into the Transjuran Republic before being disbanded through the Treaty of Lausanne.
The Treaty of Lausanne put a stop to the Sonderbund war. Granting land access between Fribourg and Valais to connect the confederation. France annexed Vaud and Geneva, taking advantage of their disconnected position.
Now France has a useful ally to help influence further east and pressure Austria. How will this change the game for this timeline?
