Daily Deviations Week
The Daily Deviations surely represent one of the most important traits of DeviantArt, for which the site itself is recognized widely. They've been here since the very beginning of DeviantArt and have become more and more established over the years. Today they're probably the most coveted "award" that DeviantArt can offer to its members.
Typical reaction of a Community Volunteer who hears the words "DD" and "award" used at the same time.
Exactly. This might be confusing, but many people think that the Daily Deviation represents an award. It's not that uncommon to find deviants writing things like "I've been awarded a DD!" or "Glad to have received the DD award!". To make everything a little bit clearer, let's read the entry in the DA faq :
The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on DeviantArtT.
Butbutbut...what's the difference?!
The difference is easily understood by reading the definitions of the two words from an English dictionary (for this purpose, I used the Oxford Dictionary ).
An award is a prize or other mark of recognition given in honour of an achievement.
Two notable examples we can refer to are the Nobel Prize (given in recognition of cultural and/or scientific advances) and the Academy Awards (given for cinematic achievements in the film industry).
A feature is a newspaper or magazine article or a broadcast programme devoted to the treatment of a particular topic, typically at length.
We can extend this definition to websites and blog articles, so that we can include the regular features deviants hold throughout the site and the Daily Deviations, or to the including of some artist's work in an art book or media.
Let's now apply this definition to the Daily Deviations and how they appear to us. We can imagine they are little daily articles concerning various topics (in our case, the different galleries on DeviantArt). The "article" is displayed in a fancy little golden box and made up of at least three parts: the title of the deviation, the username of the artist, and the username of the article's "author" (the CV who featured the deviation). In some cases, the Community Volunteer writes a brief description of the piece they selected, stating why it is an incredible piece of art. In other cases, the CVs choose other "articles" that members of the community sent them via note (the process of suggesting a DD). The Daily Deviation page, which includes every DD, can be seen as the index of the features (like an index on a magazine or book). Every day, a new issue of this magazine called "DDs" is out, ready to showcase some gems from all around our community.
I'm still confused...why can't I call it an award?
There is no contesting that Daily Deviations are special. Still, they're special features and not special prizes. If you receive a Daily Deviation, it's not because the CV is giving you an award for your artistic skills, it's more that they are recognizing the quality of your piece, and choosing to feature it for the entire community to see. Today it might be your turn, tomorrow it can happen to somebody else. 
The process of choosing a Daily Deviation is not so different from the one with which people build features on their personal journals. 
The only difference is that Daily Deviations get a nice plaque on their page (which still doesn't make them an award) and are specifically displayed on DeviantArt's "Daily Deviations" and "Today" page.
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
Getting a Daily Deviation doesn't make the artist automatically the best among their group, as well as having none doesn't mean the artist isn't skilled enough...maybe they haven't been discovered yet! The choice of a DD is led by many factors and, most of all, is about the artwork.
I'd like to end this article with a question to the readers! 
Given that Daily Deviations are strictly features (it's been stated several times!), I guess if many people think it's some sort of award, there should be a reason.

Should stay as something like an award as a feature is more like a short term recognition. An award is a more permanent badge of recognition.

Regarding the question - and I know I'm coming late to the party, I know it's a feature, and whenever I suggest a piece, I mention "for the DD feature", but I understand why people see it as an award, and it comes down to one simple word.
DD label - look at that image. It's not about the piece that was featured - I just picked one from today's listing. Ignoring the typo, the part that I want to bring to your attention is "Given". That makes it sound like an award. If it said "Featured" instead, then that would create far less confusion on the part of the average deviant.

To me, as a beginner artist, the DD seems kind of like an award. Mainly because the golden badge and the way it seems so unreachable. But yes, technically is a feature, a very special one. Hope to get good enough to get one one day. ^^

To me a Daily Deviation also seamed sort of an award, because it is presented in a different and special way on the site of the artist him/herself, other then the feature in groups and/or other Deviants pages.

I think the reason it looks like an award more than a feature is because you get the golden badge on the deviation itself, something that doesn't go away the next day, and that amazingly looking golden badge reminds people of a golden oscar award or a golden globe or a medal It feels like so much more than a feature, and i think it's in the presentation. Not to mention they used to be at the footer, much more visible than they are now. There's also the name DD, your art was not featured, your art became a DD, this is more hard to explain ^^
But i would hate it if dA changed the golden banner because it reminds people of awards, oscars and medals, because that banner is special! it must be protected *u*
Trust me, i've had my art featured in many places and nowhere has it felt more special than a DD, and i hope things stay that way, i would hate it if the DDs became a regular feature.

Calling a DD a Feature is technically correct based on the terminology deviantART uses to describe what the DD page is (essentially a fancy daily journal). But the truth is that DDs, as we've been discussing, aren't given to those in order to have a "devoted treatment to that topic." Nobody gives a DD on order to talk about the art or literature at length, such as the merit of fanfiction that shifts genres of the canon or whether or not modern art that seeks to horrify and disgust the audience is in fact art that people should see. And the only time I can recall all the DDs having one coherent theme that you could in theory call a discussion of topic was a joke for April Fools.
I have seen journals that feature a topic. They include a wide range of skill levels because the art is relevant to the topic being discussed. The *idea* is the most important aspect.
The truth is, a DD is a type of recognition of excellence. It's like the little banner on your art is a trophy you get to keep, even after the day in the sun is over. People who see that you've gotten a DD think of you work as being better than others in your genre because it has that connotation of only going to those who are really good. To argue that this isn't a prize like an Academy Award is to ignore the reactions people have to those who get a DD, and to ignore everything the CVs have said in this series. They look for greatness. They look for stand out pieces that deserve a wide audience. One might even say that they give a DD in order to honor the achievement of that artist's or writer's skill in their medium.
I'm sorry. I completely feel that the Daily Deviation is an award, by the definition of the dictionary.

Well I see it as a Cyber-Award! It is suggested by someone who believes it to be worthy, and then featured in that special place on dA, and it's an honour to receive that coveted comment under the deviation with the Daily Deviation signature so nobly placed! And not all suggestions are accepted by any means, so it is down to a CV at the end of the day to use his/her right as a representative of dA to deny or accept, to ignore or to feature. The only difference between it only being a special dA feature as opposed to an award is that I don't get a certificate or ornament to hold in my hands to say I've won it! But it feels just the same to get that special feature in that special dA folder, chosen or assented to by the said CV. (And of course, I could always do a Print Page and actually hold it in my hands too! )
If I were looking for the most amount of crazy fave's though, I'd say that even better than this is to discover your deviation has mysteriously reached the dA Front page - at least, that's what happened over the last few years when for no good reason that one could think of, this happened, I believe due to some algorithm that was being used. It happened to two of my deviations two weeks in a row!!!
In either case, these features or Front Page incidents don't necessarily represent the best of one's work. It's either computer generated (FP) or it's down to taste 
But we're always happy to receive the moment of fame!

For me, a DD stands in the middle. A DD is an accomplishment as it means you were able to provide an artwork worthy of being recognized by your peers and you're lucky enough it was selected among many. It might not be an award but it's a honor. You are honored by the deviant who suggests your work and you are honored a second time by the CV who features it. Many of us learned art by tracing Disney characters, not by attending an art school. Receiving a DD is an achievement for us.

Still haven't seen a single DD since dA removed it from bottom of msg centre, and would be curious to know if there are any stats on this (i.e. I bet the impact is 1/10 or less since Old Times)

I also wish that DDs remained in the footer. People gained real exposure in this way and many artists became known and they are popular until today thanks to a DD.
I always like watching the statistics of DDs, so I remember clearly some DDs used to have even 20,000 views and more than 5,000 faves in just 24 hours! The average was at least 5,000 views and 1,500 faves.
Now, they have 5,000 views and 2,000 faves in the luckiest cases. The average has fallen to approximately 2,000 views and approximately 200-1,500 faves, depending the category.
In some cases, they receive less than 10 comments, 800 views and 200 faves, when our Community has 35 million people! It's so sad to see wonderful pieces remaining unnoticed, even when the purpose of the DD is to make them more known.
I do hope they will get the footer back to our bottom page or at least find another way to make DDs noticed again.

Why people call it an award? Because, as it was mentioned, it's the most important, official, chosen by dA Staff, feature. It's not just a normal feature which you can find everywhere around the site, DD are one and only.
