Description Defiant Class
U.S.S. Ukraine
NCC-75216

Conceptualized in the mid-24th Century, the Defiant Class was designed as an escort and rapid response ship to combat the Borg Collective. After the devastating Battle of Wolf 359 in 2366, final design and construction was spearheaded by Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko at the Antares Shipyards alongside the contemporary Valiant Class. Early testing of the prototype USS Defiant (NX-74205) was plagued by design flaws when the vessel embarked on its shakedown cruise in 2368 and as the threat of the Borg became less urgent, the Defiant project was scrapped and the prototype placed in mothballs.

With the discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole in 2369 however, the Federation soon encountered the Jem’Hadar, the advance guard and shock troops of the Dominion. In late 2370, after a battle between Starfleet forces and Jem’Hadar warships resulted in the destruction of the Galaxy Class USS Odyssey (NCC-71832), Commander Sisko requested the Defiant be commissioned for active service and assigned to his post at Federation Station Deep Space 9. The ship was moved to the station in 2371 where chief of operations Miles O’Brian worked with Sisco to streamline and perfect the vessel. This coupled with the threat of invasion from the Dominion was enough to push the Defiant Class through to production with the USS Valiant (NCC-75210) launched in 2372.

The USS Ukraine (NCC-75216) was launched in mid-2373 and was assigned to Federation Starbase 1 and remained there for much of the Dominion War. However in 2374, the ship joined a taskforce alongside the Defiant and the USS Spector (NCC-63015) to retrieve the prototype USS Prometheus (NX-59650) which had been hijacked by Romulan forces, during which they engaged three D’deridex Class warbirds. Despite the Ukraine being hit by a stray torpedo, the Romulans retreated when the Prometheus engaged its multi-vector assault mode and destroyed one of the warbirds.

In 2374, the Ukraine joined a task force lead by the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) to repel a Breen attack on Earth, during which the ship engaged in atmospheric combat with Breen Interceptors over San Fransisco. Over the course of the next ten years, the Ukraine saw very little action and was usually assigned to escort missions as well as deterring pirates and other dissident groups. But in 2385, the Ukraine was part of a task force dispatched to defend Mars from rogue Synthetics. Although the Ukraine and the rest of the fleet were successful in destroying the Synthetic controlled ships and defence satellites, they were unable to prevent the destruction of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards or the deaths of over nighty thousand people.

After the Frontier Day Disaster in 2401, the Ukraine was sent to the Federation Surplus Depot Z15 at Qualor II to be decommissioned but was later recommissioned in 2408 as part of Admiral Marionette Romero’s Starship Reclamation Initiative, which saw hundreds of older Starfleet vessels retrofitted and returned to active service by 2409. The ship came under the command of Klingon Starfleet Captain Mortak and served with distinction during the Klingon-Federation War before being assigned to Task Force Omega to combat the resurgent Borg Collective.

Prior to the Iconian War in 2410, the Ukraine served as a testbed for new weapons and defence technologies that would late be installed on the prototype USS Valiant (NX-60890). The ship would be assigned to patrol Sector 001 during the war and didn’t see much combat until the climatic Battle of Midnight when Herald forces descended on Earth. During the Battle, the Ukraine along with two Valiant Class ships, the USS Churchill (NCC-97909) and the USS-Belfast (NCC-97910) were sent to defend the San Fransisco Fleet Yards from Herald forces, during which they bought time for the USS Nautilus (NCC-31910) to evacuate nonessential personnel from the Yards. Unfortunately, the Ukraine was crippled by the Heralds, forcing Captain Mortak and his crew to abandon ship before it was destroyed. Despite the loss of the vessel, an armistice was reached with the Iconian L’Miren, thus ending the war. The Ukraine’s legacy would live on with the launch of the Valiant Class USS Ukraine (NCC-97916) in 2411.
