Must be better than when I tried it over 10 years ago I guess... I been a pixel pusher for quite a while now. Well, except when I was using Satori Paint way back when... too bad that hasn't been updated in like a decade... won't even run on my current OS.
You get some pretty impressive near photo like work that way. Maybe I should relearn vector...

Yeah, most vector programs have come a long way since those days. I wasn't a fan of Illustrator then either. I only got into vectors about 3 years ago when the program was sufficiently improved to warrant my time.
Give it a shot. Can't hurt.

Have any resources to share for good tutorials? I don't need a ridiculous amount of detail on every step really just new techniques

Not really. I haven't really had to make use of Illustrator tutorials. Though I've seen some good one's posted around deviantart related to other things.

Honestly, just going in and messing around with the program is the best way to get to know it. That's what I did. I've never done tutorials. Just start fooling around with tools. See what they do. I approached this program like a playground, just having fun without any real agenda. Pretty soon you figure out how things work and you can start doing more focused stuff.

You must have quite a bit of patience... is there a way to auto smooth corners you don't want on meshes or must you go around and manually edit each side of any corner that occurs... I'm surprised if there's no "smooth" tool yet.

There's a 3rd party app for Illustrator called Mesh Tormentor [link]
It kind of does things like what you're talking about.
