Description UPDATE: Now available as a print, hooray!!

Actually, I think this had a different title originally, I just can't remember what it is >_<;; This is a painting I did in my undergrad, in 2000. It took 3 weeks and is, honestly, one of the best oil paintings I've ever done. My professors didn't approve of fantasy and weren't too pleased with this painting. I told them nicely to take a flying leap. This isn't a perfect piece; the photo studio background is a little weird, and there isn't enough of the griffin showing for you to really tell that's what he is. Only the ears give him away. Still, I have this hanging on the wall of my studio right now, and I love looking at it.

I love the transition from a dark wing against a light background , to a light head against a dark background! Your little logo in the corner of the piece is adorable!

The sheer ammount of colors, and their range really make this piece work for you. you didnt have to resort to any dramatic colors, but rather using something mroe natural you were able to manipulate and work the colors in such a way that...

Yea...just wow. Nice work.

...Wow, this is oil? I thought for sure it was digital. What's the original size?

Props to you for doing the fantasy thing. It's tough, considering that number of art snobs that fill up those courses, usually.

Hehe yup it's oil! Back in the day when I did stuff NOT with a Wacom *cough* I'm so out of practice with oil paints now, I'm not sure I could repeat it The original size is pretty big, about 3 feet high and maybe 1 1/2 across? I'd have to dig it out and measure it.

Yeah, I had to really fight for my fantasy, that was not the right school for me. At least I eventually found a better one

*nods* Art school is funny that way sometimes. There's been some very... ah, "interesting" conversations concerning some of my stuff during group critiques. From what I gather from listening to my classmates, if something is fantasy or an illustration then it's not really art (and God help you if you dare to combine the two).

I hate that attitude so much, especially the negative division that's put between "fine art" and illustration. I've heard fine art compared (rather aptly in some cases I think) to masturbation; you're the only one who gets and enjoys it because it's so personal; it's not accessible to anyone else. It's not that there isn't a place for that sort of work in this world, I just find that I can't really relate to or appreciate it. I'm definitely a commercial artist in my mindset. I'd rather make art that can be easily understood and which doesn't need a twenty paragraph explanation from the artist to "get", and which hopefully earns me a living too! Illustration is often more about bringing OTHER people's ideas to life, it's true, but what's wrong with that? The same skills are needed for both anyway, so I don't understand the point of the arguments over it.

Next time I'd ask your classmates what kind of job they're going to have after college is over and see if they have an answer.

Ooooh, you should hear them; and the teacher! Their plan, once leaving school, seems to be along the lines of: move to New York, do networking, be an apprentice to a well-known artist (which involves gessoing canvases for them and being a general go-for) for 5 years, then be "discovered" and make millions of dollars selling paintings.

Haha ...Yeah, no.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

This is beautiful! The different colors used in the feathers make it look more life like, as opposed to using flat shades of one color. The emotion you brought out of a bird's face is remarkable! The work invested is very visible.
Why the phooph should the professor care as long as you paint well?

Dude, that's amazing. Colouring, lighting, drawing everything. Such a lovely face, it has. SO much expression, yet so realistic at the same time. Gonna fav it, of course.

That is excellent work!

It's such a pity that "art" can't be considered awesome bits like this that blockheaded lamans such as myself can actually appreciate without having the piece's "deeper meaning" explained to us. (Sorry, sorry...I just read too much "Calvin and Hobbes" growing up, and I've come to share Bill Watterson's opinion of the "art" community...)

Regardless...despite your claim that the background looks funky, I honestly couldn't disagree more. As to your claim that only the ears give away what this beautiful animal is...wrong again. It's too big and majestic to be any sort of bird I've ever seen, and the feathers are a bit too fluffy and fuzzy looking in the main.

This is truly an excellent piece, and as far as getting prints...I say go for it!
