Description My father was San Francisco and my mother, the Pacific;
at five I was in love with nine-lane highways, the scent of
eucalyptus pressed between my fingers, yellow parchment
hills crumpled up under the eye of the sun. If I had a sunset
to myself I would curl up on a park bench like the hippies do,
and eavesdrop on the sea lions’ bedtime conversations.
Alcatraz never quite unbarred me and yet I have found
freedom in hills steep as my shoulders; I know that I am
beautiful even in the rain because I have kissed the smoke
of Berkeley and tasted her on my teeth. I was born to
dangle my legs over Golden Gate Bridge and of course,
of course I would jump – not to fall, but to fly.

Lovely poem! Feels a little bit like a poetic travel guide in a way. I love that you include smell, sound and warmth and things like that. It makes the poem very vivid and indeed I were able to smell the eucalyptus and the smoke!

Can't help you there, I lived in California for about five years when I was very, very young, and this poem was based off of my impressions from back then.

Hmm, interesting! I've crossed the GG a great deal of times, so I've gotta tell you - they actually have a suicide net under that bridge because apparently a lot of people tried to jump.

callistory In reply to MUSE-42 [2015-11-20 02:41:38 +0000 UTC]

thanks! and a net? yee gosh. I've only ever seen the crazy ol fencing and such

but then again it's been about ten years since I've actually lived in CA so it could be a new development

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MUSE-42 In reply to callistory [2015-11-20 03:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they have that across the Bay Bridge too, which is the other - frankly less famous, but better with traffic - bridge. There's so many people walking across it at all hours, and the railing is low enough that I'm not surprised they have a net.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

callistory In reply to MUSE-42 [2015-11-20 22:48:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah I only remember the old (ugly) Bay Bridge (which wasn't so great with traffic either), but they have a new one up now I think.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MUSE-42 In reply to callistory [2015-11-21 00:20:57 +0000 UTC]

It depends on which one you went on. Traffic can still get bad though. This one has an upper and lower layer, with one flow of traffic going into the city on the top, and traffic leaving the city on the bottom, I think, or vice versa (since I use the GG more). I just think the Golden Gate isn't as fast as the Bay Bridge because it has less lanes and more tourists, so you get a lot of people just stopped on the side of the road taking snaps of the city. They get herded off by highway patrol pretty quickly though, haha.
