Each time she has the dream, it lasts a little longer.  Last night, she heard the man's horse stop behind her.  Tonight, it's as if she can hear him dismount and a few steps as he approaches.  Tomorrow she wonders if she'll feel the heat of his breath against her skin, and what then?  When his touch comes, will it be to free her or to use her?

Again, the next night, the same dream. The unseen man approaches from behind.  But the howl of the wolves grows nearer too.  The first indistinct lupine shapes begin to be seen at the edge of the clearing in front of her.  The glint of moonlight sparks from their teeth. 
 
The man emits a piercing whistle.  Somehow she knows it is a C-sharp.  The wolves stop suddenly, and sit on their haunches, watching obediantly. 

"The prophecy is fulfilled," he says.  "I liberate my own Angel of Death.  The jest is infinite."  Her bonds disappear of themselves, without his untying them.
 
He continues, "My name is Joey.  What am I owed to?  A dream is the fulfillment of a wish."

Without knowing where the words come from, she answers, "I was lost because I wished in my heart to be exposed.  I was hunted because I wished to be prey.  I was bound because I wished to be taken.  I am exposed to you to be taken as your prey.  This is your purpose and how you fulfil me."

The next day she kept her appointment with Dr. Kann, her psychoanalyst. She told him the dream.  He listened attentively.  He asked only one question: "So, in this dream, you never saw the face of the man who came up behind you?"
 
"No, never.  I woke up before anything more happened."
 
"Ah.  Then I think we can understand now what it means."
 
He proceeded with his explanation, which went something like this:
 
"Your major in college was psychology, as you mentioned in our first meeting.  In that meeting you also mentioned your love of classical music, and your love for the writing of David Foster Wallace.
 
" 'The jest is infinite' is a reference to Wallace's most famous work, Infinite Jest.  In that novel is expressed the idea that the Angel of Death in one's present life becomes one's mother in the next life. 
 
"It is interesting that the unseen person's name is Joey, and he asks, not what am I owed, but what am I owed TO.  Thus, we have not 'owed', O-W-E-D, but rather, Ode, O-D-E.  And it is not "Joey", but "Joy".  Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, The Ode to Joy.
 
"Thus your dream expresses not your desire for a husband, but rather, and more importantly, your desire for a child.
 
"It all fits.  Joey is a not a man. 'Joey' is a boy's name. Joey is the child you long to have.  The wolves are your awareness of your biological clock ticking. The C-sharp has a double meaning.  The factory whistle in our little town that sounds the end of toil for the workers is pitched at C-sharp.  Your subconscious is also trying to tell you to 'see sharply' what your true desires are.
 
"We have made great progress, you and I, in understanding the root of your anxiety.  At this point in your treatment, I think it best now that you continue, not with me, but with my colleague, Dr. Elizabeth Kaplan.  There are some indications from your dreams that something which we in the psychoanalytic tradition call 'transference' is occuring.  'Joy' in German is 'Freud', and that is a reference to me.  The quote, 'A dream is the fulfillment of a wish' comes from his book, The Interpretation of Dreams.   You have come to trust me, and have at least at the subconscious level some feelings for me, your humble therapist.  So, I think it best for all concerned that I no longer serve as your analyst.  Dr. Kaplan is a wonderful person, and she can help you find peace and well-being."
