Cutsie photo for my mom.I realize that my work has been more ' personal' lately and not as technically strong or "artistic" or whatever. I do prefer the more meaningful ones, but I suppose there can always be a balance of both. I've just been out of it for quite awhile it seems.... kind of frustrating.

In my opinion personal photos carry a whole lot more meaning than just "artistic" photos taken for the sake of art. That takes something away, making the photo just a photo. In your shots, especially the personal ones, I can see that you care about the people you photograph, that there's something you want to capture and remember and to allow us others to glimpse a piece of that, it's one of the things I most like about photography.
As for this shot, I really like it. The genuine smile, the happiness, the carefree atmosphere, the warmth. Makes me smile as well. All the best to you and your family.

I like the personal ones even better, I think. It shows more feeling and passion. Yes I agree that some sort of balance is probably best, but a technically good picture isn't really good if doesn't give you anymore than a pretty view. You know what I mean?
I believe that it is all about relations. When you take pictures of another human being, that human have got some feelings, and a good photographer is able bring that out and give the viewer something more; some insight to another world/life. And to get there, you've got to be personal yourself, or othervise the picture you take (and make) just becomes another picture; not something incredible beautiful, as it should be. But offcourse when you add some technicality to it, it's easier to see the real beauty in it.
anyway, this picture is beautiful! It really shows what I'm trying to say. Her eyes and her smile is just... fantastic!

i think that the ideal balance is taking artistic personal photos. there are ways of preserving a memory while still being beautiful and artistic.
