This is the oil painting in my dream, which Emily Dickinson was showing me in my dream.

I had to teach myself to play chess, using paper cut-outs, with the moves printed on them.

My brother wouldn’t play with me, because, with my speech impediment, he said that was “retarded”.

The speech impediment was helped by a Speech Therapist at Grade School. She spoke an Oxbridge lilt, which explains my accent. My Welsh relatives thought I was “putting on airs”. They seemed to prefer me as unintelligible.

(Much like Welsh Gaelic, to the uninitiated; and, which has been described as unspeakable by anyone without as much phlegm as a hagfish.)

We had to give up “Family Game Night”, as my Mum said, it invariably degenerated into “Family Fight Night”.

Whenever my Mum or I won, my Dad and Brother would argue that we [especially me] had cheated, ad nauseum; until, I didn’t care anymore; which is a way of winning, by attrition, I guess.

As my Mum said, he’s not the worse brother: of course, her standard was her twin, who, by way of example, used to hold her head underwater; until, she passed out, to “help” her learn how to swim.

And, if my brother’s cult is right: we get to do this forever.

Of course, that sounds like the “Bad Place”, to me.

Memo: Chess is a board game for two players, called White and Black , each controlling an army of chess pieces in their color, with the objective to checkmate the opponent's king .

Chesseurs [a homonym (of sorts) for the French, “chasseurs”, i.e., hunters]:

- “Chesseurs” is a combination of chess, checkers, and whatever game pieces we had left over from the other board games, in the Chess Club, when I was in Senior Public School.

-Like most inventions, it was born out of necessity, since we didn’t have a complete set of anything to play, from the leftovers, from when my brother had been the President of The Chess Club and Student Council.

-Players would roll two six-sided dice, or one, if it was a pawn; to see which piece would win a space; instead of pieces just taking a square, like usual in chess.

Wikipedia says there are more than two thousand published Chess variant s.

But, my Dad did live it: every day more of his and my brother’s debts surface to haunt me. Just like the Climate Crisis: we’re paying the price for the petrol-chemical profits from the 80s now.
