Description Metsänpeitto (lit. forest cover) is a phenomenon found in Finnish folklore. It was used to describe people or domestic animals who went missing in nature for unexplained reasons. People "covered by forest" were described as not being able to recognize the terrain around them, even if they were on familiar grounds. In other cases they might have walked endlessly through unfamiliar terrain, or were rendered completely paralyzed, unable to move or speak. Unnatural silence devoid of the sounds of nature was also common. People or animals under the influence of the phenomenon were described as becoming either completely invisible to other people, or looking like part of the nature around them, like a rock. -Wikipedia

Wow I'm Finnish and I thought we basically have no other legends that some Swedish rip-offs and Kalevala. Good piece!

Just one thing. The Finnish and English Wikipedia pages say different things: while Eng says the name refersto  the beings that get lost, the Fin says it's a place where those who get lost may find themselves in. So it's not the lost creatures that are Metsänpeitto, it's the place that they are lost in. There they may become rocks and other things. This is still awesome!

You can also get out of it by various means, including turning some piece of your clothes inside out or look from between your legs to the other side.
You can see some one in Metsänpeitto by looking through a natural hole in a tree or the space between the earth and roots or walking backwards or throwing water on your tracks. You can also try to turn your clothes inside out. There are also songs you can sing to get some one out. There was a "wise wizard" who could get people out of there. His name was Päästäjä meaning Releaser.

Here is a story of how some people in Kuhmoniemi got their cattle out of Metsänpeitto, Coverforest:

They measured 9 times from their fence gate out to the forest using a kalamalauta, a noise board. They did this by putting it on the ground, next to the gate and facing the forest, and lifting the side away from the forest, making it stand upright, and then they let it fall over on its other face. They repeated this until they reached the correct distance. Then they took three spruce saplings from the ground, roots and all, and then they dropped three silver bits.
(I have no idea what a kalamalauta actually is or if they actually dropped the silver(they paid(not even sure) somehow), there are a lot of guesses with old, scarcely recorded words and fraces.)
Then they said:
Forest, release our cattle!|Forest, release our cattle!|I'll pay gold months old,|silver ageless|to the saplings of spruce,|the the king of the forest.

I hope you enjoy this, since it took an hour or something to dig up. Hope this isn't too long as well...

This is one of my favourite ghost stories to tell when I’m hiking with friends xD

But you can definitely relate where this tale comes from! Whenever I’m in the forest or remote nature alone you get this eerie feeling of being swallowed up by the vastness of it all.

That's a really intersting word. I love these folklore things, it's so cool what other languages have there. Also really loving that depiction, the fur is so beautiful and detailed, I love the pose with the entaqngled legs and your use of neagtive space inside the coyote!
