Just Gayle, doing what he does best. Fun fact; he doesn't actually record things for his own benefit, as part of his gift is that he can never forget any gained knowledge. He records everything with his golden quill, and should another (Lord or mortal) open one of his tomes, they would instead fully experience what was written within the pages, and also recall recorded information in that book forever. For this reason, while he writes down almost everything he knows, there are some things that he keeps only to himself.
