Mario must be a nice and forgiving guy since he invites Bowser for kart racing as well. I like to imagine that Mario and Waluigi were friends back when they were children. But once he started hanging out with Wario, his attitude and greed changed. Mario and Wario aren't even enemies to each other. They just have a rivalry that can get rough at times. Overall, I like these two despite their reputation. But you're welcome.

That can work as well. According to what I read from comics, something happened back when they were children and that's how their life long rivalry began. Thus they possibly could have been friends until that day. It's an interesting concept at least.
