Description This is my humble attempt at depicting the scene of Matthew 14:22-27. People notice the fact Jesus walks on the water, yet most don't realize under what conditions it happened. First, it was stormy- to the point several of the disciples (experienced sailors on that very lake) believed they were going to die. Second, it was during the fourth watch, which from research was between 3 and 6 a.m. In such a terrible storm and with no lights it's amazing the disciples could see Jesus approach from a distance in the darkness!
The original drawing was donated to a Habitat for Humanity auction a few years back. This was a bad Xerox I colored in GIMP. I tried- I'm still learning!

I love this! The colors (Especially the glow around Jesus and the shine in the waves) are beautiful. I can feel the awe and intensity of this picture!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you noticed that about Jesus- the Bible said the time was somewhere between 1 and 6 in the morning- but the disciples could see Him and thought He was a ghost at first! What a moment of wonder for the disciples!

i always wondered why Jesus decided to walk on water that day. He could have gotten a boat but decided that he was just going to walk. that is awesome. I also really liked what happened with peter. I wonder why we don't do this.

Like Peter, we have have that feeling of invincible faith, but then we look around and realize what we are doing/ or striving for isn't "normal" and that doubt gets a foothold. Reality as we see it can be such a bummer sometimes!

I guess that peter was around Jesus so much that his perception of reality changed to how Jesus saw it. I think the more we know Jesus and spend time with him our perceptions will change to .

Peter was the only one to call out to Jesus and was the only one willing to go out of the boat, but Peter is human, too. "When he saw the wind, he became afraid..."
Peter was the only disciple who stayed near Jesus after His arrest, yet Peter denied he knew Jesus. To me, it shows just how much we are capable of if we just have faith to be in God's will, and how easy it is to lose that focus with everything that goes on around us.

do you think it is our actions that determine our faith or what is in our heart? If we were to take that first step and thought we believed but we sank would that mean we didn't have enough faith even thought we took the first step.

If you have faith but don't get the expected result, why should that be a surprise? John the Baptist had faith and he lost his head for it. Many missionaries through history had faith, yet they were killed or driven away from those they were trying to reach. The list of Christian martyrs is long, and if you read about them, many of their stories are very inspiring despite the earthly result. Why? Because even in the worst situations, when things didn't go as they expected or envisioned, they continued to hold to their faith. Just because you have faith to walk on water doesn't mean God is going to follow you on that- "Not my will, but Your will be done."

so, we have to learn to have faith in what God has in store for us not what we want. But do you think there will be a day that God wants these things for us? to walk on water and heal and cast out demons in his name. I know there was one person that God used like this. Smith Wigglesworth. i have read that God used him like that. I want to be used like that too.

Just remember that God wants our availability. And just like in the parable of the ten talents, those who utilize the little given to them will be given more to do more with!

I think with the storm, and the time (between 3-6 a.m.) it had to be really dark- visibility at best was maybe just a few feet. That means Jesus must have literally been glowing as He came across the water! No wonder they thought He was a ghost!

oh, do you believe that God would allow us to walk on water?

If it called for it. Remember Peter saw Jesus and walked out to him and was doin pretty good before he got freaked out and started to doubt.

yeah I remember that. I always wondered what made him ask Jesus that. He could have asked anything for Jesus to prove himself but instead he asked to prove himself(meaning Peter) to Jesus by walking to him on the water. I'm not sure that it really called for peter to walk on water. It seems that he just asked it out of the blue.

I wonder what my thoughts and feelings would have been out on the water like that- before they were caught in a storm and Jesus was sleeping in the boat. They woke Him and He calmed the storm. Now Jesus sends them ahead and they get caught in another crazy storm in the middle of the night and they can see Him walking to them across the water! Wow! If you read on, the disciples forget all about the storm for a few moments then.
