Description This has been perhaps my most ambitious drawing to date! With 6 subjects and lots of details, it was difficult to get started, to get past the layout and onto to the detail. Aside from the fact that I have concentrated on dogs for the past year or so, and now had human faces to draw, there was lots to consider. Mainly that there were a lot of different textures to show, and while the whole drawing is quite large at 15”x19” unmounted, there is a lot of small and fine work to put in. Luckily, I love getting all the tiny details into a drawing, and so while extremely challenging, it was really fun to draw.

SIZE – 19"x15" (unmounted)
COMPLETED – April 2015
TIME – 37 hours over 15 days
PAPER – Daler-Rowney Heavy weight cartridge paper
PENCILS – Pentel mechanical pencils with Pentel Ain Stein leads (0.3/0.5/0.7/0.9 mm 4H/3H/HB/2B/4B)
OTHER TOOLS – Tortillions, cotton wool, rubber pencils, several erasers and electric eraser

First of all, this is a very challenging and ambitious drawing. You made it your own by adding all those details. I think you could of have made the German Shepherd darker. They normally have 3 colors (I'm sure you already know this) Or maybe the reference picture had this dog lighted coated fur!!!

For the human, if you want to get them more realistic, try to go darker but yet again, because you were working on a small scale drawing with multiple subject,it's hard to get real realism. What I have seen up to now, they do one human face on 15 x 19 paper (same one you used). Yet again, I'm sure you already know this e.deviantart.net/emoticons/let… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="395" title=" (Lick)"/>

I would add more shadow around the base of the dogs... they seem to be standing on something that isn't really there...

the only issue that I have with this drawing, is that I don't seem to get the dog front leg of the English Springer (if that is what that dog is). Is he handicap??? (not trying to be insulting)???

Overall, you did a great job. I'm sure they were very happy with your drawing... I know I would be e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Stupendous work, and yes I agree that lack of the "realistic" approach to details has so much to offer in giving a work a truly desirable quality.  So many people enjoy showing off with great pride a work of art which does not have to be scrutinized to see that it was created, and not reproduced by a machine.

Agreed. I dont wish to venture beyond my current level of detail, I like to think I am keeping an aspect of creativity to my drawing. Sometimes when viewing other artwork, Im struck more when seeing a sketch rather than a photo-realistic drawing. If done right, the sketch can hold a lot more charm than a near-photo. I guess I haven't found the right balance yet, but I'll get there in the end

Wow! This is an ambitious drawing indeed! You did a very good job in this! I love how all of your work captures so much detail and yet retains it's quality as a drawing. It doesn't start to look photo-realistic and so retains a lot of its charm. I hope that makes sense, lol.

It does, I think I have reached a point where I am happy with the amount of detail I can get into a drawing. Seeing some photo-realistic drawings makes me realise I dont want to draw to that level, or even the hyper-realistic (I dont know why I hate that word!). I can understand the argument of people saying why not just print a photo if it looks exactly the same, so I dont want to venture that far
