Selfie under the stars. 7/03/2014
I conducted a night sky photography workshop with a local camera club the other night. I typically do not take any images myself during these sessions so that I can help all the members get their shots. The weather was perfect so after the event I was keen to get some images myself on the way home. This is a location I have shot before for my image "Field Of Dreams" with Orion rising on the horizon. Now, almost exactly half a year later at the same time of night, the opposite side of the night sky featuring the central bulge of our own galaxy is rising in the same position.
Green colour in the sky is airglow. Canon 5D MkII, 14mm, F/2.8, ISO 3200, Single 30 second exposure.

I love how the windmill sticks out against the sky. No matter how spectacular a man-made product is, it has nothing against the natural universe. I also love how there is a man standing there in the middle of it all too.

Are you using a moving telescope to get this? i dont do  many at all and the ones i do get have star trails.

No.  Look up the 500/600 Rule.  It will tell you what your maximum shutter speed should be for you camera and lens focal length when using a simple fixed tripod.  I have a blog post about it here:  www.capturingthenight.com/astr…

Awesome shot, the weather looks fantastic there at the moment so nice and clear I wish the weather here was half as nice here. We are about to be blown away by yet another cyclone up here in Queensland and I feel like I haven't seen the stars in months so thanks for sharing so I don't end up forgetting what the sky looks like
