In my POST-MORTEM AU, he was a Fatherless Toymaker in the 1800s, who died in a HORRIBLE Accident that caused his limbs to be Bent and -Crooked-

As a Ghost, The Crooked Man acts as a Sort-of Guardian for whoever Child, is gifted his Zoetrope, his Zoetrope is what tethers him to the Mortal world. He plays with the Children, sing songs with them, and might even incidentally keep the children from harm.
The Crooked Man is a Type 2 Ghost, meaning: he's still in this world due to an Unfinished Business. His Unfinished Business being.... Having a Child of his own.

He does get a Tad bit Protective of the Children he chooses to take care of, if any Adult does even the slightest harm to the child, The Crooked Man won't hesitate to make his presence known. He'd ring a Bell. And then scratch the said-Adult. Usually if the harm isn't too bad, what the Crooked Man does is push or kick the adult responsible. But if the Harm upon the Child goes too far, the Crooked Man wouldn't hesitate to Violently attack any of the Adults involved.

It was after having killed a Child's father in a Bid to protect the Current Child gifted with his Zoetrope, The Crooked Man realized that he's starting to get obsessed with the Children (Not in a Disgusting way, mind you) that he's starting to lose sight of his Morals, and is slowly twisting and Dementing with every physical harm he commits to innocent Adults. That he willingly brought himself to.... Gracey Hall.

To this day, he wanders the grounds of Gracey Hall. This time, playing with the Ghost Children within the grounds, where he won't be able to hurt anyone anymore. Though his twisted appearance hasn't really changed.
