Description
rocks crunch underfoot
as we walk along the wall of stones
built by the sea.

a loon wails low,
a pair of crows bicker and squabble in the trees,
a gull soars slowly overhead.

we clamber down to a brackish pond
and watch the little fish scatter-swim away
as we glomp along the water's grassy edge.

climbing back over the rocks,
we scamper down past the rotting seaweed
to the dark blue, sparkling sea.

i fling a rounded stone -
it skips out over an incoming swell,
then slips through its glassy sheen.

i rest my aching knee,
and we sit and talk, plucking and casting
more smooth stones to the waves.

as i pick up another,
you point out the delicate bands of quartz
undulating around its circumference.

and we are lost, looking at rock after rock,
basalts, schists, granites, and glittering mica,
with an endless variety of veins and inclusions.

dragons that we are,
we even smash open a couple
to examine the minerals inside.

we guess at the history of each,
the past imprinted in metamorphic patterns,
an odd sort of lithography.

forged in fire,
cooled, compressed, twisted, broken,
sculpted by the sea.

and as we look up and down the beach,
we see hundreds, thousands, millions of rocks,
a different story etched in each.
