Description Edit: Thanks for the feedback, guys. I had a play with the wings to try and make them blend better. Let me know if it worked!

I've always wanted to do a dragon manip, and this was my first attempt. I have mixed feelings about it. Unfortunately I have no real digital painting ability - I'm mostly a photomanipulator, and the problem with that is that if you can't find decent stock it gets very hard. I think I managed to make the body work, but in this case, I am really not happy with the wings.

That being said, I've been playing with it for so long - 12 hours or thereabouts - and I think it's time to let it go and move on.

If anyone knows where I can find decent dragon wing stock, let me know!

You can see the deteails of the head here .

This is great!
I love dragons but I couldn’t find a decent way of manipulating something into a dragon… now you gave me an idea on how to do it!

It involved a lot of patience, cloning and use of the liquify tool.

Good luck!

I really like your dragon here--He just looks like a baby dragon to me for some reason. I think it's that he doesn't look like he will eat you. He looks as if he will lick you to death. I, for one, would rather be licked - -lol. Of course, then you have to consider the fire element to his breathe and being burned to death by a cute baby dragon is not high on my list of "to do's" on ways to die--even in my fantasies. Good job on this fella!

It might be the size of the eyes that make him seem more baby-like...? I can see what you mean. And yes, I'd rather be licked than eaten... though it's possible that you could be licked before you're eaten, like a kid with an ice cream.

Better to be eaten in love than in anger--hmmmm.

I watched a kick-ass show about lizards the other day...my favourite one was the little one that could fly, but it didn't have wings as such. It spread its RIBS to make kinda of gliding wings...very cool indeed. This picture reminds me of that cute little lizard. I love how you've put clouds in at the dragon's feet, like it's really high up...it reminds me of table mountain in Capetown.

I like it, but I think the dragon looks a bit too mechanical and not real.

Do you think that's because of the colour of the scales?

I'd not be getting too stressed about the dragon. Nice scale texture. I took a photo of a very big skink (well... a Blue Tongue) the other day and they have very similar texture and might prove to be useful stock if you can get one to pose for you. They have very stumpy little legs though so they would need to have some work done there.

Not that I am a dragon expert (by any stretch of the imagination) but the wing to body shading looks a little abrupt for my tastes (feel free to tell me to f**k off).

All in all way cool.

Cheers

I think you're right. I will probably go back and have a play with the wings, once I've had a bit of a break from the picture.

Cass,

Fair enough. Its good to have a break from a work and look at it again with fresh eyes later. Still think its good but.

I think you did a marvelous job. The wings are great they remind me of the wings off the "Dragonriders of Pern" books by Anne McCaffrey. The only thing I think I might have done is made them a little darker so they blended/flowed better with the body. Just my opinion of course as I am a photographer not a drawer

Cassandra28 In reply to GeodeLady [2005-11-13 04:04:45 +0000 UTC]

I tried to make them darker but they just ended up looking sort of ... weird.

Maybe once I have had a break from it I can go back and play with it some more. But I was just starting to get annoyed so I thought it was time to leave it for a while!

=shadavar-stock & ~sadestock might have something, might work if manipulated with scales on them or such.
