Description The Hypnotist was one of my very first gargoyle creations! It also has one of the more disturbingly darker presences.
He was inspired by examples of Chicago's Terra Cotta elements form after the Great Fire. These kiln fired building ornaments were made to look like limestone carvings, but at a fraction of the cost. Quicker to make, less costly & fire proof made this type of ornament ideal for a modern city, way back in the early 1900's.

A funny recollection...When I was first making these back around 1993, my apartment studio was in old factory building, and it had a huge gas heater that hung from the ceiling to heat this big room... that I also used to dry these castings by hanging them in front of it...which was also right above my bed. I'm sure it was a strange site to walk in the place and see a dozen of these guys hanging precariously by thin wires over a mattress on the floor, I very glad none of them ever fell! If they had, it probably would of killed me, or at least it would have hurt like hell!

Thank you Sylvan!  The design was inspired by a photograph in the book "Nightmares in the Sky".  This book was a huge help when I first started trying to find good reference for gargoyles that were actually used on buildings.  If you ever get a chance to look through it, you'll see several of my early pieces were replicating 19th century designs. I was trying to immerse myself in the aesthetics of the late Victorian design, to be able to create now as it would have been done then.
