They were...different, the twin siblings Hansel and Gretel. That was clear from the very moment that that brunettes were born.
They were smarter, reaching milestones much, much faster then their peers did.
Both spoke their first words with only sixth days of life since their births.
They were unique.
Set apart from their peers, not only by their prodigious intelligences but also thanks to the small, fuzzy, reindeer like antlers that grew on either side of their heads.
Yes they unique...
...and for that they also came to be despised.
Hated, loathed by every soul in their village, the twins and their parents were driven far from town. Right onto the very edge of the darkest, and most terrifying part of the Black Forest. A forest teeming with beasts fowl, creatures monstrous, and the practitioners of magic of the most wicked kind.
Despite this cruelty the twins grew in wisdom and in charity. Their mother was their tutor and she taught them well. Shielding them from the vile, poisonous hatred of the villagers, while embracing the good that she saw within them both. Their hearts were was bright and as loveable as their youthful faces were angelic. They had a happy, if not simple life with their father and their beloved mother.
Burdened with poverty but blessed with true love and an ever present joy...
But as the rain falls upon all in this fallen world, the good, the bad, and the venomously ugly, so to did sorrow again enter their lives.
It might have been, as the villagers had insisted.
It might have very well have been an accident.
A spooked horse, a serious flaw in the masonry at the old market...
...whatever the case was the result was the same. The only bright spot in the lives of the benighted twins, their beloved mother, had been extinguished.
She was gone and they, and their father, were completely alone.
And things only grew darker and darker still.
Their father changed when their mother died.
His sorrow soured his aching heart. A seed was planted that day. A dark seed that turned his heart against his children.
Every day he saw them his hatred grew.
And everyday he treated them more and more cruelly.
They were over worked, underfed, and the clothes they wore were little more than the barest of threadbare rags.
Every night the two deer children cried themselves to sleep locked tightly in each others arms, and every night they dreamed of their mother and the wonderful life that they all led before her parting.
Little did the children know, and little would they suspect that, as much as they had suffered, as much as they had already endured, the worst was yet to come.
One last injury was to be afforded them by their prodigal protector father...
