Every system, whether naturally occurring or artificially created, has a flaw. The soulmate system held many of them. The common person could easily name off almost every problem that threatened his or her fairytale.

1. Although rare, their soulmate could be abusive. Most soulmates would willingly sacrifice their lives for each other, but sometimes they lack this selfless love and even perform violent actions against each other.

2. Even more rare is the idea that your soulmate might not be matched with you. While your world explodes with vibrant color, the other person continues to see the world in grey.

One thing nobody thought about was a natural disposition. Nobody had ever heard of a blind person finding their soulmate, because how would they know? They didn't see any colors or even black and white. How would they know when they found their soulmate? Being blind since birth, these questions often haunted you. Though your mother attempted to provide a small glimmer of hope, you decided long ago that your soulmate didn't exist. It was the one thing that made being blind almost unbearable.

You navigated your way through streets and buildings well enough. You learned to recognize people by their voices or specific scents. People didn't treat you differently or bully you. And although you were envious when others talked about witnessing the amazing waves crash against the shore or the birds flying above the trees, you never let that envy consume you. But the belief that you would never find that one, special love? That very thought saddened you to the core, ripped through your soul and left you hollow.

“(Name)-san? Are you okay?” Sugawara’s gentle voice flowed into your thoughts like a peaceful stream. It carried you from your deepest thoughts back to the stairs leading to the high school. Although school had ended, you promised to wait for your friend to join you outside. Said friend was concerned, you noticed due to the tone of his words. “You never answered my question.”

“Oh sorry. I guess I spaced out.” You laughed softly. “What were you saying?”

Sugawara smiled sadly, though he knew you couldn't see it. “I just remembered that I have volleyball practice today so I can't walk home with you. But you're more than welcome to join me at practice. You can sit in the gym until we finish if that's okay with you.”

You gave a brief nod to show that was fine before you stood from your seated position. In all honesty, you loved sitting in the gym while the team practiced. The sound of the ball hitting the floor followed by a triumphant yell made you happy, however strange that seemed to the other players. One player in particular always managed to bring out your rare chuckle. And as you entered the gym, you instantly sensed his presence.

“(Name)-san!” The small boy yelled loudly.

You chuckled softly as you placed your bags on the floor and sat next to them, crossing your legs in front of you. “I'm blind, not deaf remember, Shouyou?”

The orange haired volleyball player slapped his palm against his head, cheeks flushing from embarrassment. “Ah sorry. I just haven't seen you in so long I was excited to finally see you again!”

Another low chuckle rumbled through you as you placed your hand over your mouth. “How cute,” you whispered to yourself.

They began practice shortly after you arrived. You listened to their shoes squeaking against the floor as they ran to hit the ball before it collided with the ground. Of course, most of the time the ball managed to make contact with Hinata’s face instead of the ground. Poor kid. He loved the sport so much, but sometimes it seemed like the sport didn't reciprocate those feelings.

“Pay attention!” The harsh command came from Kageyama. “Stop staring at him and focus on the match.”

You assumed he directed his comment at Hinata, though you weren’t sure who distracted the boy. You did notice, however, that the gym became oddly silent as the shoes stopped moving across the floor and the boys began whispering amongst themselves.

“Kageyama. Stop. He hasn’t told him yet,” Daichi said calmly, though his voice held a certain plea as if he was begging Kageyama to stay silent.

Kageyama simply replied with an exasperated ‘Why not?!’ to which Hinata yelled, “Why do you think?!”

The air grew thick with an awkward silence and while you couldn’t see the club members staring at your tall frame sitting against the wall, you could certainly feel it. “Um,” you began with a shaky voice. “Should I leave?” Your fingers grazed across the strap of your school bag. “I-I think I’m going to let you guys work this out. Um I’ll talk to you tomorrow…” you whispered softly before dashing outside.

Finally, the fresh air filled your lungs and the rapid beating of your heart slowed to its normal pace. “What was that?” You breathed out and leaned back against the door. Some part of your mind yelled for you to run far away, and maybe you should have listened to it but when the sound of yelling appeared curiosity soon followed.

*Third Person POV*

“You can’t just keep pretending that he isn’t your soulmate,” Daichi began. “Every time he walks through that door you turn into a mess of emotions. And we can all see it.”

“You don’t understand!” Hinata exclaimed suddenly. “You don’t know what it’s like to have a wall not only on the court but with your own soulmate. I can see color now but that means nothing because my soulmate can’t even see at all so he has no idea that he’s even my soulmate!” Hinata clenched the fabric of his shirt as tears formed in his eyes. “Not to mention he’s a guy who is my friend.”

“It isn’t fair to (Name), though. You need to tell him. He’s convinced that he will never have a soulmate, so please don’t continue lying to him.” Sugawara placed his hand on Hinata’s shoulder, offering a sympathetic smile.

Hinata didn’t respond as well as everyone hoped, however. Instead of agreeing or giving into the third-year’s plea, the first-year threw the volleyball he held across the gym. Without saying another word, Hinata gathered his bag and stormed out of the building. To his surprise, he rammed the door straight into a tall figure with (h/c) hair, successfully knocking him to the ground.

*Your POV*

Tears filled your eyes as you sat on the ground. The impact of the door didn’t hurt near as much as the conversation you heard, though. And by the stunned silence, you knew who had stormed outside.
“Did you hear all of that?” Hinata asked quietly.

You laughed bitterly, a sound that made Hinata’s stomach churn, before pushing yourself off the ground. “How long have you known?”

“Since the first day you came to practice with Sugawara, but (Name) let me explain,” he began but stopped when he noticed you turn so your back was to him.

“I heard enough,” you mumbled while you began to walk away. “I’m just a friend right? The system messed up. It isn’t new to me. I get it. Don’t worry about it.”

“No!” Hinata reached out, wrapping his small hand around your wrist.

It happened so quickly. One moment you saw nothing, not even black and white, and then all of the sudden the world came into view. The vibrant green grass near your feet. The serene baby blue sky with birds of the darkest brown soaring above your head. You saw everything.

“I didn’t mean it like that! I do like you and I’m glad you’re my soulmate. I just didn’t want to ruin our friendship or make you upset because you still couldn’t see me.” Hinata began. “But I don’t care anymore. I’ll explain every color and image to you as best as I can. I’ll bring you flowers so you can smell them and feel the petals while I describe the different colors. I’ll—.” His words were cut short when you turned on your heels, eyes wide as if you had seen a ghost. “W-what? Why are you crying?!”

You reached out slowly, brushing your fingertips over his cheeks before sliding your fingers through his hair. “Shouyou,” you whispered breathlessly. “You’re so small and beautiful. And your hair is the most vibrant shade of orange. My mother told me about it before and I’ve heard others talk about it but...their words can’t compare to the real thing.”

“Beautiful?! I’m a guy! You don’t call guys beautifu—Wait y-you can see me?”

With tears in your eyes, you traced your thumb down the side of his face and finally over his lips. Instead of answering his question, you leaned down to softly brush your lips against his. Hinata’s eyes slowly closed, but yours remained open. You loved the red hue spreading across his cheeks and the way his eyebrows furrowed together as if he was concentrating. He was made up of so many colors and shapes you had never seen before, yet you knew how to describe all of them. “Perfect,” you whispered against his lips.
