The sea must be rather calm if Aku Aku and Crash were able to avoid all those crates bar one.

Crash and Aku are very lucky that the sea is calm at this point in time. If it wasn't...they wouldn't make it. And all the crates would explode in one big bang.
Its usually on windy days, storms or even night time that the sea can get rough.
