What a strange, yet really cool metaphor.. It's Christmas night and while the families are inside, watching movies and enjoying their presents, you're out getting photos; No less significant, no less reverent, but still a defining idea. I'm prolly rambling but I really like this.. You gotta tell me how you get such great low light shots..

For me it's the best way to spend Christmas night. There are people around but not too many and the city's very peaceful. I went out last year and took pics Christmas Eve and Christmas night too.
I hope your Christmas and your vacation in general are going well.
The best thing about night pics is the guess work and that's only lessened with a lot of practice. I almost always use ISO 200, f8 and I set the camera to"bulb" and count in my head any of seconds between 3.5 and 6 usually cuz I mostly use a digital I shoot five different time counts per setup. The main thing is to play around with the in camera white balance.

They went great..
But as for night shots, you've gotta use a tripod for that, otherwise they come out blurry, correct? And will "fluorescent" work instead, I dont have bulb.. What knids of things do you mess with with white balance? You mean like the colors to prime it to?

Leading the eyes to the capital-like building, with the use of the path, and lights, and trees. The bench is fantastic as well, patching together the rest of the frame just right, I have a feeling your Christmas was more exciting than mine.
Could just be the drugs though.

Ummm well the drugs helped my Christmas along quite well actually. For the most part it's, so far anyways; dread-dead boring as hell.

Mike Mike Mike, I would love to know how you can frame it so that there is such a balance of complexity that it shows yet is not too overwhelming. And, I hope you don't say it is just luck or something. I wouldn't want to get out my friend Old, Rusty Carving Knife. Although, I do think he would enjoy the attention.

Kyle Kyle Kyle, Good question! I walk around a place a few times and get a general sense of what might be of interest then I find a spot that's kind of neutral so that nothing in the immediate foreground detracts from the shot (sort of like the mouth of a funnel). Usually I'll take about six shots (digital) from one distance, using a few different f-stops and shutter speeds (rarely do I change the ISO from 200). then I'll move zoom in or out and maybe even flip the camera to it's side, like I did in this one, to get the dome of St Lawrence Hall. What I need is a wide angle lens like Taylor uses.
Luckily in most cases, as in this one, I don't need to recrop the shot in photoshop if I just go with what feels right to me. A lot of it's instinct my friend and a mystery to me too.

Ah, you always can explain things so nicely. It is unfortunate that Old, Rusty Carving Knife shall remain lonely.

"Old, Rusty Carving Knife" would be a very cool character for a one to three box per topic comic series.

Thanks so much Heather! Your book was much loved as a gift to the two people I had planned on giving it too and the third copy I ended up giving to a niece that is studying photography. I showed her yours and Violets dA galleries and she was blown away at your styles and abilities.

I love my gorillapod. It's cool to hang on the side car windows too if you're in an iffy neighborhood or the weather's bad or really cold LOL . I guess you don't have many "iffy" neighborhoods in Dryden but if you ever see a timberwolf or a bear near the road it makes for a little less drama while shooting a pic LOL
Happiest New Year to you and your family Heather... I hope you get a lot more well earned commissions and grants!....oh and thanks for the online pshop link I like online storage a lot and well 2GB ya baby!

aww Mike. I was unemployed for a long time (3 yrs) up until a few years ago (depression)and could spend all day and night on my computer and the internet which I think helped me to keep from isolating too much. In the past year your photography has come a very long way my friend and that is a good accomplishment that may pay off one day.
I hope you have a good year in 2009!
