last gasp of summer...a few things I was thinking about - contrast of organic (flesh) with inorganic (shell), the shell as protection, the spiral as an inwards-looking device... color and light.

*sigh* How can you achieve these insane textures and blends with digital media? How?
The concept itself is lovely; the way you've illustrated it is gobsmackingly good. Love that little blue spiral; nice touch, almost too "simplistic" a symbol in such a wildly realistic piece. I can't stop looking at those toes; that thigh where it meets the hip; the nacred interior of the shell... so many details! How did you do this! This absolutely reinforces my yearn to understand how to achieve this level of realism, and eventually come to blend it subtly into symbolism just like you do.

I guess technically you are correct. Though is a shell still organic after it no longer has a snail inside? Hmm, questions to ponder...

According to dictionary.com, organic is defined as (among other things):
1. noting or pertaining to a class of chemical compounds that formerly comprised only those existing in or derived from plants or animals, but that now includes all other compounds of carbon.
2. characteristic of, pertaining to, or derived from living organisms: organic remains found in rocks.
So... once organic, always organic, I guess.

I really like the concept of organic with inorganic. Along with the man, it feels very much like a baby in the womb type of feel. As if he is within the shell being born and seeing the world for the first time.
