Description
The last days before Heinz and Charlene split were the best Vanessa could experience as a child, building -Inators with her father in the basement.

It's from a story idea I've been turning around in my head for over a year, but haven't finished outlining yet. It's likely I may not be able to complete it, so here's an excerpt.

[Vanessa]

I sat by the machine, doodling an -Inator of my own fancy, an Agree-inator. It was a ray gun with two shooters, one for each person who disagreed. It was a funny thing, because I was seven years old and worrying about two grown-ups squabbling about hobbies. Proud of my invention, I outlined a plan to craft a real Agree-inator, for when Mom and Dad were asleep. That way I wouldn’t need to put up with the heavy tension between them, and after I’m done shooting them with the ray, it’ll be goodbye to the cold, impersonal business-meeting aura they put on in my presence.

“What’cha doing, sweetie?” Dad asked casually, looking my way as he paused after tightening a screw. He wiped his brow, ambled toward me, and peered over my shoulder.

“It’s a secret!” I giggled, sliding the drafts out of his view. He ruffled my hair and kissed my forehead.

“You’re on your way to being evil, aren’t you?” He tried sneaking a peek again.

“Nuh uh,” I grinned. “Hey Dad.”

“Yes, my baby girl?”

“Could you stop calling me that? I’m a big girl now!” I stood on tiptoe, that way I was taller than him, since he had a terrible slouch. “See?”

“Alright, Vanessa,” he smiled. “What did you want?”

I cleared my throat to begin, “Dad, can you get me one of those new Mary McGuffin dolls? I showed Mom the commercial on TV last week, but she said we’ll get one after the craze dies down. Something about everyone wanting one too and the malls going nuts.”

“Heh, talk about going nuts. ‘Get a job,’ she says, ‘or get out of my house,’” scoffed Dad, mimicking Mom’s angry voice. He reached for a pen in his lab coat and added a note on the corner of the large blueprint he had laid out in front of us. The blueprint, when unfolded, actually spanned half the room’s floor area. “Hmph. I’ll get you that doll right after this -Inator. Promise!”

“You’re the greatest dad in the world!” I squealed, jumping at him for a hug attack.
