Description My husband and I were so excited when Desolation of Smaug started, and you saw Thorin stomping around the streets of Bree. We could have watched him wandering town for the whole movie in all honesty! I actually envision this happening after Gandalf left Thorin to think about what he said, and still wondering about his lost father Thrain. Poor dwarf!

I was feeling a bit down while working on another drawing of Thorin, and I pulled out some regular drawing paper and meant to draw something else... but this happened. And I kept adding to it and adding more... it was actually meant more as a distraction to keep me drawing and get out of my blah mood. I had fun with it, except a few sections, but I'm still happy with it. Especially how Thorin turned out. I'm still trying to push myself to draw backgrounds a little more. I wish I had inked this drawing, but since it was on thinner paper that's not as smooth, I had to use pencil.

Drawn on 11X14 Strathmore drawing paper, using a variety of art pencils (2H, 4H, F, HB, 3B, 4B, 6B, 8B... you get the idea... heheheh). Photographed in B&W, and had a little trouble cropping out non-paper/drawing sections without losing detail of the drawing I wanted to keep.

I almost forgot! This was sketched in blue pencil first -- here are some of those in the Scraps section:

I love how this turned out, and Thorin looks so sad and huggable! I was excited about that scene as well. I was so glad they showed us the meeting between Gandalf and Thorin in Bree. It's important for the story and it gave more insight into where Thorin is coming from.

Thank you! I agree -- in fact, I'm obsessed with all the pre-quest possibilities. I wish there was a lot more detail about that part of their history.

AW it's awesome! and I just really love the Bree scene! it puts the story to a totally different view, and gosh I just hope Thrain's story will have a conclusion in BoFA, he and Thorin both deserve it!!!

Thank you! Yes, my husband and I were practically squeeing with excitement when we saw that whole first part. I had seen a photo of them at the table talking before the movie, but you know how you can sometimes forget everything when you finally get the chance to watch the movie, so it surprised me at first.

Oh, I hope we see a little more with Thrain too. After all that teasing in the movie trailers, it would be a shame to not show it. And who knows exactly how the movie version will be handled anyway compared to the original story. Just seems such a shame to have a great-looking character -- Thorin's father -- and then not give us even a glimpse more. Just random mentions here and there. Ah well... there is only so much time they have. Perhaps an extended edition or... who knows?

I'm personally prepared to write soemthing not-entirely-polite to PJ if Thrain is not in the last movie! first cos he really deserves the big screen and second for that he is teasing us with it so he better has a reason for it! I still think the EE's does not really count-I mean, shouldn't be the cinema version the best the director can come up with??
Yep, that part is simply wonderful and I always say that no matter what will happen in the last movie THAT is Thorin Oakenshield.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see... let's keep our fingers crossed, as fans of Thrain!

Gosh, this is beautiful.

Actually, I like the fact that it's in pencil, it gives it a softer look which works really well with this scene. Poor Thorin really has the weight of the world upon his shoulders, hasn't he? You've really captured that weary, melancholy expression.

There are lovely contrasting shades/textures on the stones of the hearth, and as ever you do a fantastic job on all the fiddly detail like the pipe, the braids, the armour scales. And I'd like to single out the vambraces as being stunning.

(By the way, are those pickled onions? I've always wondered.)

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment! It might have gone a little faster if I'd used ink wash for some of those fun shaded spots and tones, but it was very interesting using pencils for a change, I'll admit! I had a lot of fun with it, but I'm also not used to something that smears so easily. I kept getting nervous I would ruin the surface and even the paper is thinner than I'm used to. Heheheh! And thanks so much -- I adore drawing him, not just because of all the fun details of his costume, but also because of the range of emotion you can try to push yourself to do.

And I was wondering that as well! I kept squinting at photos and trying to see, and "pickled onion" kept popping into my head as well! Heheheh!
