Wow, can I just say I really like how this turned out. This is a recolor, manip, and composite of three stock images. I hope you enjoy it!
The compass rose is from "Find Your Way " by kalilo of sxc.hu.
The main image is from eye stock 3 by ~bobbistock .
The map is from "Europe Map " by spekulator, also of sxc.hu.
Huge amounts of thanks to each stock providers for their contributions!

I know they used the line in that movie, but both the line from the movie and the title of this work are references to text that map makers used to put on their maps in uncharted areas, especially areas where people would go and not come back. Not sure when it started, but it used to be a common practice, along with "Here there be dragons" and the like.

Tons of practice - seriously. Some people can just do it, and I really envy those people. For me it just takes a ton of trial and error. Thank you, I'm glad you like it, it's one of my favorites.

why thank you, I'm glad you think so! I've only seen a couple of compass tattoos, but its not what I'm looking for; I'd like a compass with my favorite constellation near it-- a sense of direction under my favorite stars? its a tattoo I wish I had right now!

Ah, I see. It's a reference to ancient maps, which would sometimes mark off unknown areas with that text and with variations ("here there be monsters", "here there be dragons"), and sometimes would even draw pictures of monsters. I believe it's all tied in with people's fear of the unknown, compounded by the rampant ignorance of the time.
