Worry

Pâte dropped his notepad and pen in shock. Right before his very eyes, his son and his customer just vanished in a wave of bright light. He would’ve stood there like a statue if not for his wife barging in the café.

“Dear!” A Raichu wrapped her arms around Pâte, dropping her fishing rod in the process. “I felt something bad would happen so I ran all the way here from the docks! Then I saw this bright light coming from the shop! Tell me what happened!”

Pâte looked at his wife with unfocused eyes. He was still in shock and his wife shaking him was not helping. Realizing her mistake, the Raichu put her husband down on one of the many chairs in the shop and sat herself down on the chair opposite Pâte. It took him a while but Pâte finally got himself together again.

“Mina, I…I really don’t know.” Pâte buried his head in his stubby hands. “One moment, I was just taking the order of my last customer, then Cromwell came in, then that Audino started making weird faces…then there was this bright light…then they just disappeared.” Pâte removed his hat and started fiddling with it to try and ease his stress.

“Do you think it’s the Audino’s fault?” Mina asked, removing her hat as well, and putting it on the table.

“I…don’t know. Before the light came flooding in, he looked really surprised but...I really don’t know.”

Mina sighed. She was getting really worried for her baby. They both were. But sitting around was not helping. She stood up and gestured for Pâte to do so as well.

“Don’t you sense it? There’s some kind of strange energy in the air.” Mina waved her hand around and small sparks came out that was not her own. “Let’s test it before it dissipates. We might find out where Cromwell is now.”

“If that Audino harms one strand of Cromwell’s, I’ll…!” Pâte stood up and threw his hat in a fit. Mina was glad that her husband was finally back to his usual self…even if he was usually testy and hot-headed.

The pair went to the stairs behind the counter that connected to their house. The shop and their house was just one building, with the shop on the first floor and their home in the second. But they didn’t go up. Instead, Mina opened a small trap door behind the staircase and went down. Only the two of them knew of the existence of the small door. Once Pâte got in, he closed the door. The door disappeared into the floor, as if it was never there.

Down the stairs was a lab. Every nook and cranny was filled with technological devices that the couple made and maintained themselves. It was a law of Steel City that those who leave should never bring out their technology unless there were special circumstances, like the casino in Alomomola. But, the couple was never really into absolutely obeying the law. They did know, however, that if their little lab was found out, they would be put in prison and Cromwell will be left alone. They couldn’t have that, so they kept it a secret from their son. They agreed to tell him when he was older, though.

“Dear, you know what to do.” said Mina as she sat down on the chair directly in front of the largest screen in the lab.

“Yeah. On it.” Pâte picked up a small, radar-like device and went back to the shop.

One would think it strange that these two knew what they were doing, despite the rarity of the case that Cromwell and Ri got themselves into. But, the couple did many things in their youth before having Cromwell and settling down in Alomomola. Energy readings were one of those.

Mina started typing on the keyboard rapidly, eyes and hands coordinated so smoothly that one would think they were the same thing. Numbers and strange symbols flashed across the screen, bathing the large Raichu in its ethereal light. This went on for a few more minutes until the speed of the moving symbols slowed and then stopped altogether. Pâte came back shortly afterwards.

“Just as I suspected. Psychic energy. Something Audino’s can’t have.” said Mina. Turning her chair around, she faced her smaller husband, asking for his input.

“If I remember right, even if a normal type uses a psychic type move, the move still has normal type energy, yeah?” Pâte put down the radar as he said this. His hands were shaking a bit due to the strain of carrying the surprisingly heaving radar but he didn’t mind it. Although he knew a bit of engineering and made many of the gadgets in the lab, his wife was still a better engineer than him. A job as delicate was what they were doing couldn’t be entrusted upon him. That left him with the heavy lifting.

“Yes. Either that Audino had help, or he is a victim just as Cromwell is.”

“But…do you know where Cromwell is now? We can look for the bastard who did this later.”

“The move was some kind of teleport but not exactly teleport. I don’t understand it!” Mina pulled at her ears in frustration. “And if I try scanning the area, it’s like they’re everywhere at once! It’s so…!” Running out of things to say, she slammed her fist on the table top, sending a few gadgets tumbling off the table.

“I…don’t know where they are. Heh, that was pretty useless.” Mina slumped into her chair and wept.

Pâte was getting extremely worried now. It was normally him who blew his top and Mina would be the one to get some sense into him. But now, the tables have turned and he really didn’t know what to do. His son was missing, along with a potentially dangerous Audino, his wife was losing control of her normally mellow temperament, his nerves were also itching to hit something…so many things were going wrong on a supposedly normal day.

“If only she was here, huh?” Pâte mumbled softly, hugging his wife to calm her down.

“Yeah. Bubble would really help right now.” Mina hugged Pâte back.

“Can you get in contact with her?”

“No. I tried that but she’s moving too fast for the server to catch up. She must be on the run again…”

“Hmm…”

The couple stayed that way for a while, just hugging and trying to comfort each other. Wherever Cromwell was, they wanted him back safely, immediately. He hasn’t been gone for an hour yet, but it already felt like a lifetime to the two.

“Cromwell…”
