If you have any questions, I can do my best to help! (:
Mine was like a lot cheaper and easier to make than Furin's, but a lot of what she did looked better than mine. So I guess it's based on priorities. d:

She had a step by step process on her blog, I don't have the link, but you should be able to find it by googling furin cosplay Wheatley (:

All you have to do is get a cheap recorder that can record more than one thing, and then I had a list of the order of quotes glued on the inside where only I could see it. (:

So mind explaining how you can get him to talk? I kinda know the process of it, but I'd love to know what you did!

Honestly, it's simple. All I did was buy a voice recorder and I recorded some quotes from Rick. Then I put it into the core on the end of the puppet rig that controls his face for easy access. Then all that's left is pressing play and making it look like he's talking by moving his face and puppeteering his eyelids.

Oh awesome, and one more question, how did you do the eye lids? Did you have your fingers go into something to move it like if it was a mouth?

Ok, so I'll explain this as best as I can;
I made two eyelids out of foam core and gave them two little wings on each side [link] like they have in this picture, except I made mine go out horizontally. Then I tied and glued some string on each wing, and they all came to a stop a little farther than the center of the core. Then, I separated the top strings from the bottom strings, to organize which strings controlled which eyelid. I tied the top two into a finger sized loop, and the bottom two in the same sized loop. Then, you can put your fingers through the loops and pull the top loop to make the top eyelid go up/open, and you can pull the bottom loop to make the bottom eyelid go up/close.
I hope this made sense, but if you have any more questions, just ask away! I have limited visuals, so I have to explain mostly with words.

Hi! May I ask how you made the general spherical base? I know you mentioned you followed off Furin's process as a guide and I'm just asking because I actually want to make a core to wear. I'm just not sure how much foam cubes to buy ( and I guess that's how I myself am going to build the base and to make it big enough to carve out and wear). But, did you do anything different? I'm not new to prop making or anything but spheres seem pretty difficult to make depending on how you're going to use them. Thanks in advance and Rick really does look great! Is that fiber glass resin you used for the outer shell for him?

For the base I used a basketball, actually. And for the outer shell, I used wonderflex, if you don't know what that is, it's a type of plastic that becomes shapeable when heated. I hope that helped!

my advice: start small with paper crafting. thats where i started a couple of years back. then, i gradually worked my way up to bigger and bigger crafts. that effectively launched my craft skills

You figured out how the puppet rigging worked? Would you mind sharing how? I saw furin's but I couldn't figure out how she got him to move...
π: 0 β©: 1
Chanditoys In reply to DieselPoweredDoodad [2011-10-31 23:03:45 +0000 UTC]
well actually, i move it free hand, but i do know how it works on furin's. so how she did hers was (u might want to look at a visual while i tell u this, its hard to explain) that the rig lever has two side pipes that rotate up and down. then, at the bottom of the rig, there's another rotator (also made of piping) that is vertical. this turns it left and right. in a summary of what i just said, look at her final plan picture on the blog.
