Cool, i love knights
too bad their usually portraited as klumsy metal wearing and swords wich are thick and blund
while the armor of real knights were lighter than the combat gear of nowadays soldier and of course the weight was better divided , even the full plate , note: a armor that did not hinder the movement of a warrior at all (no more than most light armors of course ) and was basically inpervius to slashing attacks
(especially if the wearer was moving around and using martial techniches (yes thats right the samurai and european warriors gained similar combat training , sadly only the japanese one truly survived :sad)
did you know that samurai lords for instance in the 16th century, if they could obtain it (buying gifts etc.) they would always carry these to the battle field cool eh
also the european (including that of the knights) swords were more often more enguenuish than even the katana (despite some lame movies or katana collerctors stories)
basically it was a single edged curved sword best used for slicing at unarmored opponnents because the point could yet make horrible wounds, it was also very fragile as was the entire sword.
but the samurai were cool too, but the idea of not being able to live with shame (were knights fought trial after trial, they were more of warlords, but were driven though still (despite the romanticise) by pity and faith being able to complete magnificent feats. Where the samurai not fearing death at all was great at the battlefield as well)
i find not that appealing. still though.
but what surprises me most is that the samurai is portraited as the ultimate war machine while a knight was know at first (before the christanisation of the knight) as the ultimate war machine. lets compare them shall we,
a knight had to quard and proceed through terrain many times the size of japan, where the samurai (despite some attacks on korea and the like) was always in japan self, not only had the knights to adept to different kind of terrains and situations, he also thus meaning had more acces to better weapon development. and japan and europe were both exactly the same situation. Also the samurai's bishudo (meaning way of the horse and bow
yep NOT way of the sword as it is romantised) meant he carried 3 weapons: the spear the bow and the katana plus a dagger for close range, the knight had a dagger for short range usually a lance (a special spear) plus a very versatile sword ( usually when people think about a knight sword they think about the armor piercers not the really good ones who very extremely sharp )
but not to bother you sry too much free time at the moment
