I, the little girl
As you cried your lacy tears
Helplessly watching the birds
Laughing
While they flew away from you

I watched you reach out
With loving tendrils, in spirals
Spinning round and round,
To caress
Blazing, fiery trees

I saw
They died, each one, in your arms
And you, silent in your innocence
Did not stop the persecution

I watched you wrap your wings
Compassionately
Around the new born's cheeks
And as it cried out in terror
I saw your clouds of rejection
Swirl gloomily overhead

I saw your forlorn look
As spring came a-strut
To push you out
Heroically
And in your weakened state
You allowed the abuse

The player on the stage
Who's part is more than beautiful
But who cannot be loved
As a hero is loved
