Saw a similar photo on tumblr and thought it'd be a great excuse to try out some new texture brushes!This took longer than it probably should have.
I don't think I possess the ability to speedpaint.
Also, the feline uprising has my full support, of course. ~

You could use a little work on perspective. THe cat perspective looks great, but the wood kind of looks like it was just placed behind the cat. When you have straight-lined things, such as buildings, sidewalks, roads, and wooden floors, you need to have a vanishing point, to which everything is angled and steadily gets smaller. Even if you can't see the vanishing point in the piece, all of your straight lines need to look like they'd eventually meet and go in the same general direction.
I know it's a bit hard to understand with just words, and you really need to see the process, so I've found you a tutorial that looks really good if you ask me. [link] My art teacher taught me this, so it was a bit easier I guess. =/
Sorry I didn't say anything earlier. I haven't had a lot of time lately.
The textures look VERY nice, you just need to make the cat look like it's a little bit more a part of the background in some areas. But it's really good, especially considering you're self taught.

Firstly, thanks so much for taking the time to critique! I really appreciate it.
Even though this was meant to be a painting exercise more than a serious piece, it's nice to hear some ways I could improve.
With the background, I did try and go for that effect - I just tried to not make it too apparent as the point of view is supposed to be looking down slightly, y'know? I see how I could have emphasised the perspective, though. c:

I think I prefer this style of you drawing your cats.
As in, the more realistic, yet not completely realistic, style.

I like it too, my only concern is that it's limited in the sense that at the moment I have to reference photos really heavily, so it doesn't feel like this is really my work - only practising technique as it's not my pose idea, etc.
Floors are fun though. ^__^

How do you do floors? o3o Do you just like, blend a million colours or something because I can't do them. I have trouble with the angle, too. D':

...You act like I know what I'm doing?? For experimental pieces like this, 90% of it is just trial and error until I get something half decent. xD
And I'd heard there was a bit of snow in Scotland, but I didn't think it was that bad? o: If so, though, that's just not fair. There's nothing here - it's not even that cold.

You do realise I've got where I am now by experimenting, don't you? |D That means that experimenting actually does some good. ;D But, there must be some means of doing the experimenting otherwise, it wouldn't have turned out right.

The weather has gone so weird here! When I woke up there was a tiny bit of snow here and there. It's not even been especially cold so I don't really know what's going on at all. xD
