It's interesting how knowing the mechanics tied to the card colors my perceptions of it, but I'm going to try to remain nonbiased.
I've always thought that the key to making a Magic setting resonate with people is to have it feel 'real', that is to say not be just a bunch of angry wizards and monsters killing each other, but to have a whole world behind that.
You can tell us it's there, but it's better to show us, and this does just that.
