Description
It was raining, of course, it was raining. The one day lieutenant Hawkeye had a day off, it would rain. How is this not surprising? I thought as I trudged home, completely soaked. The rain-of course-started to pour down harder, there was no walking in this. I groaned as a started looking for shelter. I found nothing in-sight that would protect me from the rains heavy assault. I searched the area for shelter the last time yet, what stuck out to me was not shelter from the rain but a child. She was wandering along the road, I approached the child. I saw that she had matted H/C hair and poor clothing, no respectable parent would let their child roam in this weather, especially in her condition. She had a small, thin, frame and looked like she hadn't slept in a proper bed in months.
"Hey, kid" I called to her. Knowing I couldn't just abandon the child.
The child looked up at me and smiled.
"Hello" She grinned
"Hello..."
"Whatcha do'in?" She asked "You shouldn't be in the rain, It's cold" She laughed again
"Well, if it's cold then why are you out here in it?"
"Oh, that's cuz my home is soggy right now" She replied
"Soggy?"
"Well yeah, cardboard doesn't like rain very much, it gets all droopy" She giggled once more, twirling around a puddle.
"Do you mean to tell me you live in a cardboard box?"
"Uh-huh, it's my home" She smiled
"Where are your parents, they should not let their child live like that"
"Well, I dunno I never met them," She said, skipping around in a circle.
"Surely there is somewhere for you to live, like an orphanage, maybe"
"Nuh-uh I don't like it there, the kids hit me, and the old lady makes me sleep in the cellar, it's colder down there than here, so I'm fine"
"I was unaware that the orphanage's condition was that bad" I mumble to myself. I sigh, the rain was slowly easing but, I could not just leave this child.
"Well kid, would you like to come to my house? Maybe dry off a little? I can give you some food"
"Sorry, I can't" She replied
"Huh, why not?"
"Cuz you're a stranger, and I can't go with strangers"
"Well then, I guess we must introduce ourselves so we're not strangers, sound good?"
"Okey-dokey"
"Well, I'm Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang, and you are?"
"I'm Y/N L/N, Nice to meet you Lieu- Lieu-"
"Lieutenant, Colonel"
"Lieutane-"
"Just call me whatever's easiest"
"Okay!"
So I and the child started to walk back to my apartment. The child occasionally twirling or singing some random tune.
"I like the rain" She stated abruptly.
"Why?" I asked, unable to comprehend the child's fascination with it.
"Because it cleans the earth, it makes everything shiny and new, it's like all the dirt of yesterday is washed off and a new day begins"
"That's pretty intellectual for a child"
"Intellectual?"
"You know what forget it"
"Alright!"
We arrived at my apartment, everything was slightly askew. I let the child enter and she marveled at all my belongings.
"Have you never seen a stapler before? Put it down"
"Leave the lamp alone"
"Don't touch the paper-work"
"That is not a toy"
"Don't- You know what are you hungry?"
She vigorously nodded her head. I scowered my pantry for something to eat. My eyebrow twitched at the realization that I really needed to go grocery shopping.
"Heh-How do you like instant-noodles?"
"Those are good" The child cheered, I mentally noted to get food for her tomorrow. After we had our 'meal' of instant-ramen I had sent her off to shower. I set some of my old clothes out for her, they were more than likely too big. Maybe I can borrow some of Fullmetal's clothes for her I chuckled at my remark thinking just how the Pip-squeak would act if I actually asked him. The child emerged from the bathroom wearing some clothes that I hadn't worn since I was a Private. They looked adorable on her, I kinda felt like taking a picture of her and then showing it off to everyone. 'I'm turning into Hughes' I thought.
"Well, off to bed Pip-squeak. You got a big day tomorrow seeing as I have to go to work"
"Yay!" She cried as she ran to the guest bedroom.

I had walked into my office with my Tag-a-long running close behind me. Everyone suddenly stopped, I sighed I feared this would happen.
"Watcha got there, Colonel?" Havoc asked slowly slinking up to my side.
"A Plus-one" I replied curtly. "This is Private Y/N L/N, She's with you Fuery"
"What!? A Private!? She's like eight!?" Fuery said
"Excuse me, she has her rank, see?" I say, as I show them my old coat she was wearing, which still had my old rank on it.
"Alright, let's get to work, I'm with you Fuery," She said sounding almost like she was trying to imitate me.
"Alright then here's your paper-work, Soldier," I say as I hand her a few blank pieces of paper and some crayons.
"Excuse me, Colonel, I want Private L/N's paperwork, please," Havoc said
"No, you can't have my paper-work Havoc," Y/N said proudly
There then came a collective 'Awww' from around the room. I sighed once more.
"Get to work Havoc, and stop pestering Private L/N"

"Good work today, Kid" I say as I tuck her into bed.
"Really?" She asked her face beaming.
"Yeah, you did alright"
"Yay!" She cheered "I'll do better tomorrow too!"
"Well I'm depending on you, kid You have very important paper-work to complete"
"I'll do good, promise"
"Well, I going to need the prettiest picture you can muster by the end of tomorrow, Private L/N"
"Alright, Daddy, I will," She said as her eyes closed and she faded off to sleep. I stood stiffly staring at the child. Had she really made such a bond to me? I sighed, whatever the case was Private Y/N L/N wasn't going anywhere, and I gently kissed her forehead.
"Goodnight Kiddo" I said as I left the room.
