Thank you! And yeah. I mean I get why a lot of people didn't like them, (Hell, Emil's one of my favorite characters in the series and he managed to piss even me off at a few points with him frequently bashing Lloyd during most of the game) but I don't think they were nearly as bad as I think people tend to make them out to be? I dunno. I liked them, but to each their own I guess.
(And oh boy, if you think this one is bad with the amount of characters, you should see my Tales of the Abyss one. I had the stupid idea to shove all the God-Generals in there and hated my life for the good two weeks that I spent on that one lol)

Oh no, Symphonia nostalgia...Please don't tell me you think Symphonia is the best because of nostalgia? I'm tired of that being the reason >>

I do definitely like Symphonia the most, and nostalgia is certainly a big factor in that, but whether or not I think it's the best tales game is another question entirely. (Which, for the record, I do not.)

Off the top of my head I'd say probably Abyss? I think they did pretty amazingly in terms of story and characters. Which I feel like is kind of the whole point/appeal of Tales games.

I'd mostly agree with you there, though I think it made a big leap for gameplay, too. From Phantasia up to Legendia, Tales had always been on a 2D plane. Symphonia tried to trick you into thinking there was a 3D plane, but that was blatantly false.
Tales of the Abyss, with Free Run, completely revolutionized how the battle system worked, and made character archetypes that used to be incredibly difficult to play (The archer, the mage) much more viable options. Natalia was the first archer character in a Tales game who wasn't considered laughably underpowered, and you had to learn to dodge around if you ever wanted to beat Asch in a one-on-one.
Tales of Graces took the system Abyss started and refined it more, until the series had a competent, beautiful battle system that is, to this day, my favorite way to play an RPG.
