Epic hike today to Ka'ena Point where I got to see the endangered Hawaiian monk seal in the wild.
Monk seal populations have been struggling for a while, but more recently, vicious rumors spread by local fishermen claiming that the seal is both non-native and to blame for the declining fish stock, have led to several monk seal killings in the past year alone. These rumors are blatantly untrue: the Hawaiian monk seal is found nowhere else in the world and has been a resident of these islands longer than Hawaiians have. As for the declining fish stocks, well they are due mainly to a combination of pollution, overfishing, and poor resource management.
Seal protection efforts are ongoing.
