From the story:

... When they first met on Vanaheimr, Farbauti was looked like about the age 14 or little older, Odin was can be almost 20. In that time Farbauti was allready promised to Laufey and was about marry him (but Farbauti was not in love with him (yet) sooo.....listened to Odin‘s sweet words he in the end liay with him. It continued for few days. Odin wanted him to go with him to Asgard and marry him, since he is frost giant and can bear children. Farbauti refused, saying that it isn't possible that he isn't in love with him, that he likes him, but that is enough. Odin firstly didn't uderstand, but than he let Farbauti go with the promise, that he will wait for him........but wheh be become king and heard about the wedding of Jotunheimk kings.....it broke his heart.
