Yep! And (if I remember correctly) went over the areas I wanted softer with a tissue and eraser to make the shiny parts more white.

Hello,
This is very well drawn! Your human anatomy is fairly well done; you have a slight problem with the angle he's facing. Either the top of his right shoulder should be lower than his adam's apple, or you need to rotate the lines on his torso to match the angle of his shoulders. His tail is absolutely fantastic! You don't have any trace of that annoying 'legs in the costume' problem that seem to plague merfolk drawings. I like the size of his tail fin; it makes it seem like he would actually have enough power to swim with it. The extra fins on the tail make him seem much more exotic than the Disney style tails. I like your use of a ventral fin; good for modesty without begging the question of 'how do they reproduce'. Bonus points from me for having webbed hands which still look human!

I have always had problems with shoulders, and even now when I tried to fix it couldn't quite place what needed to be fixed. I think what you said really nailed it though! I'd imagine merfolk would need a bigger tail to be able to actually move in the water.

I love the look of his tail, it looks like a real fish tail, which makes the merman look better lol.
I've seen too many pics where they draw the mermaid/man with a tail that looks as if they are wearing those latex suit-outfit.
What I mean is that it looks as if they draw legs then erase the feet, only half of the inner line separating the legs and add a fin. They often bend exactly like human legs, (not a fish tail which doesn't have knees!)they even get skinnier at the 'knee point' and then get thicker, like a calf muscle. Like I said, it looks like they drew a human in a mermaid/man suit, instead of looking like a real mermaid/man.
Not only do you have the tail behaving as a fishtail should, you made it look more fish-like be adding some fins along the tail's lenght, not just at it's end. That's why I had to add this to my faves.

Dx I absolutely suck when it comes to coloring though... and I'm kinda a perfectionist. so I hate when I color and it loosk terrible compared to my drawing.

'sides, you can always save the original sketch and lineart in separate files, so that way even if the coloring stinks, you don't have to show anyone. <3
