Sorry about the late reply... I was in Japan.
I would bleach it a bit to lift the cvolour... it doesn't have to be strong... Just do it so that the ginger is lighter and all over a lighter colour... then use a toner.( I use a pearl toner) on your hair... It gets rid of orange/ red tones in your hair... then you can dye it any colour you like... it should go back to a pretty neutral colour ^-^
Anything else just ask ^-^

Wow, this was so helpful, and it seems really easy! I hope you don't mind, but I have a few questions!
1. OK, so I have dark brown, kinda blackish hair with recently dyed red roots (God, I know, what was I thinking?). I bought some red hair dye from Sally Beauty Supply yesterday, and was going to dye my hair dark red. I asked the lady at the counter if this kinda of dye would work on my hair, and if I would need to bleach/lighten it before. She said no. So when I got home, I did the usual business for dying my hair, waited about 45 minutes (that's what it said to do if you had close to black hair) and it only turned my roots red!Dx So now I look like a complete idiot prancing around town with black hair and red roots! Plus, everyone at school is now labeling me as the 'emo goth chick' (I have nothing against those people that's just not who I am) and I want to have blonde hair again! Now the thing is, I don't want bleach blonde hair, so I was wondering if it is safe to put more dye on my hair after I bleach it! I want sort of a dirty blonde, just got done surfing in Florida look! Sorry, this is super long. I hope you can get back to me soon, because you seem like the real deal! Thank you soooo much! I don't know what I would've done without this article!!!(:

Hello ^-^
I believe I can solve this problem for you.
If you have patience, you can fix it.
Step 1: lightening your hair
• we need to lighten the bottom of your hair. Mix the bleach and apply ONLY to where your hair is dark… not the “red” part… so NOT the roots.
•what this will do is lighten (or lift the colour) from the dark part of your hair.
•you need to leave the bleach on until it is a dark blonde/medium blonde (more likely orange-ish because of the red dye) lighten it to a colour that is well on the way to being blonde. Don’t be frightened of the bleach.
• once you are happy with the colour… rinse with shampoo. Use a small amount of conditioner… just so you can brush it.
Step 2: Matching the roots (this step can be omitted if the first attempt of bleaching worked well and your ends are light)
• Your hair will look sort of funky now… with red roots and orange-ish ends. This is ok… it is good.
• this step – more bleach. To all of your hair. For a shorter amount of time.
• what we are doing here is lifting the red from your roots, and lightening the rest. (this bleach can be diluted with a bit of water or shampoo if you like… so it isn’t too strong)
• after say… your hair is dark yellow more than red-orange, you can wash it out.
Step 3: toning! Most important!
• at the hairdressers, this step is missed. Buy a toner… silver or violet.
• toner removes the red/ yellow from your hair.
• put it in and follow directions…. It hurts my head a little… but it’s ok.
• use it until our hair is more ash than yellow.
•wash it out!
WAIT 30-60 mins - this is so the bleach has no effect on your dye, it stops patchy-ness
Final step: the dye
• buy an ash blonde. Loreal is a good brand. Buy it in permanent.
• apply to the ends first, leaving the roots… then apply to the roots. (this is because the roots are lighter and will not need as much time to develop.
• follow instructions on packet.
• wash out!
Use a deep nourishing conditioner and leave in for a little while.
You should be fine.
This can be done in a day, or over a few… depending on if you are staying indoors all weekend or not I guess…
ok well i hope this helps... let me know if you need someting explained, or need more info or any questions or whatever... good luck! ♥
