That one is actually supposed to be Florian.  But those aren't my final designs for them.

Did a few character sketches of the boys:

Bless, OMG. (Florian in the newer designs definitely looks every bit Cyril and Hilarion's slightly irritated babysitter, which he basically is.) Also - tall, skinny Cyril is my absolute life-force.

Yay!! So glad you like them!  I must admit I went through quite a few designs for these guys.

Cyril in my head was always tall and thin, and a bit of a klutz.

Absolutely, oh gosh - to contrast with Psyche, given that she's so self-preserved and demure! (He probably keeps tripping over his dress.)

Oh, absolutely.  They are almost complete opposites.

I'd love to see him fall flat on his face.  He probably got the extra large one.

We've had him put his on back to front and just generally be a little silly, ah c:

All the air went out of me when I saw tiny baby Nanki with that ridiculous trombone. I love the whole page- who's the girl with the double braids in front, though?

Heh. Yeah, you never really see him with it in the play so I just had to draw it.
Thanks so much! I just love Gilbert and Sullivan (after all I do have a whole folder of it in my gallery their plays are just so much fun and the characters, while not always lovable are certainly entertaining! Just love everything about them, music, stifles characters, dialogue. Just wish they had done more.

Well, the girl with the braids with the guy on the left is Lisa and Ludwig from the Grand Duke. And to the right is Princess Ida with a couple small braids on the side. Was kind of going for a steam punk feel with her.

Ah, from the Grand Duke, ok. Also- ooooh, steampunk.

Back during Mikado I had briefly thought it might be fun to just go through and play all the Jessie Bond parts, seeing as how Pitti-Sing was so much fun. That said, a grand fourteen is quite enough to be getting on with for any company... plenty of fun! With occasional heartbreak and so forth, of course.

I thought it would be fun if the woman's collage had gone steampunk. That they really WERE planning to send a wire to the moon. I can just imagine Castle Adamant with this big steam powered rocket attached to the side of one of the towers.

I've never been in a play like that but I do it at home while I'm reading the libberatos. . At one point I wanted to do a graphic novel of the Mikado but I only finished two pages.

I love sketchdumps! ^^ There's something about the energy in sketches that really appeals to me. And yours are great!
Unfortunately I'm not terribly familiar with any of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, though I would love to see some of them. I think we read The Gondoliers in school once? I'm not sure though. And it would have been a German version.

I like to look at people's sketches too.

Gilbert and Sullivan were kind of like the Rogers and Hammerstein of the 1800s--only funnier.  Their plays have such amusing characters, extremely creative and unexpected plot twists, witty dialogue and incredible music.

My favorite way to enjoy them is to listen to the music while I read the liberatto and come up with the play in my head.  But there are a vew good videos of some plays out there.  I reccomend starting with the 1986 version of Pirates of Penzance with Linda Rhonstat, Angela Lansbury and Kevin Kline.

The Gondoliers is such a fun play...but it's certainly easier to understand in English as that's what it was originally written in.  My favorite character in that is the Duke of Plaza Toro.

That's actually a really good idea. I found a site where all their plays are readable online. Only need to find the time to sit down and go through them...

Ok, I'll have a look at that. Thanks for the recommendation!

The name rings a bell. But I can't remember any details. It was a really long time ago.

The Mikado is my favorite. But most all of them are entertaining.

You can rent it from YouTube or Amazon and possibly Netflix.

This gives me an idea. I wonder if the plays also count as 'books'... We have to read a book for school and write an essay about it. And taking one of their plays would be really interesting.

Cool, I'll have a look tomorrow Thanks.

chill13 In reply to artsytarts [2014-04-17 01:38:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I think it would totally count. It's a story and your reading it. It works. Yeah, and it would be something no one else would be reading.

Fantastic.  That's not mean't to be Mabel is it (top left)?  She's meant to be plain in the story!
Surprised you haven't done a Pirates/Scientists/Penzance medley yet...

chill13 In reply to JD-Ripper [2014-03-24 01:37:21 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember any mention of Mabel being plain.  Ruth, yeah.  But Mabel?  Linda Rhonstad is pretty and she played Mabel.
However, she's based a great deal on the actress I saw play Mabel on stage a few months ago.  She did FANTASTIC.  I loved her portrayal.  While Mabel is usually played pretty sweet and innocent, this girl played her quite brave.  Like the scene on the top right.  When she says "hold monsters" she whips Frederick's sword out of it's scabbard and points it at the Pirate King.  Frederick rolls his eyes and takes it away from her.  But that doesn't stop her for a second, instead she shoves her fan at him.

Yeah,  I know.  I really need to do that!!!!

Oh I agree traditionally the part is played by someone beautiful, but consider the plot: the other girls cannot marry until the eldest is wed, and they are all anxious as it’s been a while.  They then state in the build-up to ‘poor wandering one’ that there are none with ‘bad complexion’ etc and Mabel goes ‘Yes ONE!’  The girls then say that *he* is ‘a thing of beauty’, not her…!  (Charming I’m sure.)  Nonetheless, I like your version; goes well with Ida & Josephine.

Ultimately I see it though as the character shines through in personality in the end.  Sweet and innocent true, but as Rhonstadt emphasised, with a degree of authoritarianism.    She certainly bosses the Police around!  Lol your rendition sounds both great and rather fits this too.  Love it!

I did see a version where Mabel was a bookworm with glasses and she was late to the beach because she was reading and catching butterflies.  While there were a lot of things in that production I didn't like I DID like Mabel.

My goodness, yes.  She has those policemen effectively under her thumb!

Sounds adorable!  Some productions of G&S can be so terrible alas where people think they can 'improve' it.  Nonetheless, that's a nice variation, as is her standing up to the Pirate King.
Lol well they are a wimpy lot...!    Taran-tara!
I presume you have the DVD set (all bar Utopia/Grand Duke)?  A bit cheesy in places but still rather good.

Well, they put little music tags of well-known songs in with the G&S songs and it was distracting.  They also had some rather provocative dancing with Freddy and Mabel and the Policemen were portrayed as completely drunk.  I donno, I just didn't like it very well.  On the other hand the lighting, the choriography and staging were fantastic.

No!  I've never seen that!  I have a couple versions of Utopia but I've never seen the Grand Duke anywhere.  I just have the music.

Oh dear; no need for provocativness (part why I went off panto).  The worst I've seen was Pinafore set in 1912 to parody 'I'm flying' from Titanic (with a gay Admiral too) and Trial by Jury in a Western Saloon with chorus girls and the defendant being killed...
Strangely atm I'm looking at clips of probably the most surreal - an Australian pop version which, although iffy in places, is like G&S meets Village People.  Hilarious!  XD

It would have been nice if the set had made Utopia/Duke to complete, but such is life.  It's a good series of productions and well worth watching even allowing for minor limitations.  The cast do a good job too - in Ruddigore they even got Vincent Price as Sir Despard and he's great!  Tis one of my favourites; lol I've even donned topper as Sir Ruthven...

Yeah....they actually had a pirate and policeman kiss at the end.  All in all I was not happy with the production at all.

There's some clips of a Western Mikado that looks pretty entertaining, though.  "If you want to know who we are.  We are gentlemen of the west.  And this right here's our bar, where we belly up when we're stressed."  And they re-fashioned the names like Lanky Lou and Kitty Shaw.  There's maybe three or four clips from it on youtube.

I can but imagine!
Lol that sounds different.  At least it won't have the difficulty of 'Trial' where the crime has never been illegal in the US!!!  Will look it up.  What do you think of The Zoo btw?
Random thought: your art and take on G&S is so good, have you considered proposing to a publisher (or even doing it yourself via kickstarter or equiv) a G&S graphic novel series?  Would be fab!
