[...] The steady breathing of Ratchet rustled Alister’s fur. While he did notice the feeling, he did not find it uncomfortable. The hand holding onto the younger at his waist curled slightly before it slid to the other side and moved the other’s body into a more comfortable position. Then he bent Ratchet’s legs by pulling one of his own closer.

The younger purred lowly as he found it now more comfortable. In an attempt to reach out for the general’s shoulder, he stretched out his hand, only to find the action too strenuous to complete. Instead he decided to leave his hand half-raised and leant it against the other’s upper arm.

Alister nearly opened one of his eyes at the touch, but decided against it. Too cozy their current situation was, making him reluctant to break the calm atmosphere. Instead he reached out, closing his fingers around the other’s hand and holding the younger tightly.

- Excerpt of ShellShock, Chapter 9

--

Once every year I put all my artistic efforts and patience into one piece. It's become a habit to do so, and most times it's around the first quarter of the year. [The rest of the time I'm practically artistically useless lol] And now it is time for me to reveal my, I may be so blunt, best piece up to date.

About the Artwork itself:
It's a scene from ~Priestess-Shauni 's and my roleplay ShellShock , chapter 9 to be exact. I wanted to finish this wallpaper before releasing the next chapter, because it pretty much describes the mood in SS, as well as in that particular part. Azimuth definitely deserved a rest after what he has been through, and Ratchet is too shell shocked to keep going. Thus... They are resting.

About this Wallpaper:
The sketch for this wallpaper has been sitting on my HDD for several months. I believe I sketched it in October, and wanted to complete it. However, school, work, and other projects hindered me to do so.
I initially planned to finish it during my winter break, but I was too caught up in educational preparations. So I only worked on and off on it until this term break where I split my time accordingly to work efficiently and have time to color this. Also, I wanted to do some lineartless art once in a while again.
You can clearly see that some parts are influenced by TRON: Legacy. Yes, this movie has been a delightful muse to me, and it enabled me to work at a much faster pace than before. [For comparison: the first third needed two weeks, the rest 8 days.]
I've tried out some new coloring techniques, and I must say that I am pleased by the outcome. Very much so. I do hope that you like it too. I worked on a slightly bigger canvas [1440x900 pixels], so that people with bigger screens can use it too.

With that being said, I hope you enjoy this wallpaper. If you like it, can I ask for a comment and a favorite? It would mean so much to me.

Epic comment commence! >.>

What I appreciate most about this painting of yours is how the figures seem to emerge out of the darkness, painting on top of a dark color makes for a stunning effect. You've really perfected the art over the years I've watched you ... I remember back in the days when your lineart would hide all your subtle transitions. I've always been waiting for you to make something like this, sans the lines! My favorite part of the painting has got to be those light effects on Alister's tail; you gave it such depth with the shading that it looks perched on the edge of the painting. I feel like I could reach out and grab it ... hmm, in my art history class we talked about that effect and how it makes the viewer feel more involved in the painting ... I wish I could remember what it was called! Either way, I do remember that Caravaggio used it. Old masters FTW!

The composition is also impressive. I really like the diagonal balance of the screens in the top lefthand corner and Ratchet and Alister in the bottom right corner; it's good how you've left nothing smack dab in the center. Center positioning works well in some cases, though I don't think it would have looked nearly as good in this one. The good balance paired with that perfect geometry add to the calm atmosphere, but the darkness and bold glowing parts give it that moody, almost ominous feeling. Which is awesome!

The only real critique I can think to offer would have to deal with color. Just for balance's sake, I would have liked to see a little red and yellow on more than just Ratchet and Azimuth, even if it was just subtlely there in the shading on the screens. Though I think the colors do look quite good now, a little more red would unite the two corners a little bit more, even if it was just slight.

Annnnd since I've had this in my inbox so long, I also thought of something else! Just as a side note, I think it would be awesome to see an even vaster scope of the place where they are. You could add a ton of interest to future work by moving up the viewer's eye level (I've seen you do worn's eye view before on that epic painting of Alister ... I know you could totally do a high viewpoint!) In big settings, it would give a sense of space that's huge, engulfing, swallowing Azimuth and Ratchet right up in that lovely blackness. Anyway, it's just a random thought for you to take or leave XD Just keep doing what you enjoy :>

... That comment IS long XDDD

Well, I'm really glad that you pointed this out! I just wanted to give it a dark, uncomfortable feeling while maintaining a bit of a peaceful atmosphere. XD I didn't know about this effect! Good to know about it.

Well, thank you XD It didn't turn out quite the way I wanted, though... I wanted it to look more... blue. But it isn't blue enough, it's all dark blue. XD The monitors don't look the way I want them to look. The only thing I'm happy with is the way Ratchet and Azz came out. Half hidden, half visible. Mmmyes.

Well, the problem is that the whole picture should be blue. XD The room is mostly blue in the story as well, thanks to a force field. I'll try to get it in, but I don't know if I will succeed.

... BAH XDD That would kill me! You mean from above? Now that would be epic, yes. I have to think about it. And whether I can do it.

The background of symmetrical Tron-things is nice. ^_^ It might take the focus away from R&A a bit, but it's quite nice in its own right. The ears are very nicely detailed, and the blood is an interesting detail. (Not sure why I noticed the blood. Probably something wrong with me.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chinara In reply to Introcrat [2011-02-23 17:36:32 +0000 UTC]

XDD One can clearly see when I started working after watching Tron, hm? Believe it or not, I intended them not to be in the center of attention. XD In some way they are hiding from their pursuers, and thus should not be spotted immediately from the viewer either. [Then again, they are sitting to comfortably out in the open. Hm.]
Of course! cx The ears are so fluffy, they need to be detailed to be fluffy. <3
Which blood do you mean? On the floor or on the two Lombaxes? XD If the latter, you are the first person to notice that detail. I actually expected our readers to notice it first [as they are much more aware of the background of this wallpaper], but it seems that you are quite more perceptive. [By no means there is anything wrong with you! D: You just amazingly perceptive, and it makes me quite happy that you noticed. cx That means that details get noticed. <3]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Introcrat In reply to chinara [2011-02-28 07:20:01 +0000 UTC]

It is somewhat apparent. XD If you were trying to make them appear hidden, then you did do a rather good job - a nice balance between completely stuffing them in a corner and making them the centre of attention. (True, they're not really hidden. They look as if they've just collapsed after a harrowing escape. Not a bad position, so long as they aren't trying hard to hide.)
And fluffy they are. I should never have doubted your dedication to fluffiness. XP
On the Lombaxes, mostly. (The blood on the floor is fine too, but less detailed.) I can see how everyone else would miss it, though - it's rather hard to notice, and isn't very big even when you download for the full view.

It's good to know that I succeeded at this effect. XD I was thinking hard how to show them openly while keeping them hidden. [... Do you know how close you are to the actual circumstances? XDD]
Well, it is somewhat clear to perceive, now is it not? XDD;; I can't believe that there was a time where I did not like it...
XD Your perception astounds me each time, do you know that? You're much more perceptive than the others. They wouldn't even have noticed it if I had made them bigger. XD;

It's a good thing. I think. XP
Indeed you did. I can't think of any other way to successfully achieve that effect. (Nope. I sort of assumed it was a bad guess. But if it was good, it speaks only to the accuracy of the piece.)
You were once not so enamored of fluffiness?
I'm sure they would have, you don't give them enough credit. (: And you have to admit that it is rather small.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chinara In reply to Introcrat [2011-03-04 14:12:49 +0000 UTC]

XDD Only in the eyes of the spectator, not in the eyes of the open book.
[Your bad guesses are most times very accurate, out of whichever reason. XD I don't know why but most times you are correct.]
Yes, there was once a time where I didn't like anything cute. I just... couldn't stand it. XD; It has been some years since then, but still.
... Yeah, it is small, but... XD Still... It's sticking out, red/brown on gold is quite distinctive...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Introcrat In reply to chinara [2011-03-05 21:53:19 +0000 UTC]

Hardly. XD Openness and approachability are supposed to be good things.
(Either I'm lucky, or the fact that you're an open book affects everything you do. XD)
Fair enough. I must admit that I'm not a massive fan of cuteness myself. Still, it's better to like it.
True, true. Though all the colours are rather muted, not vibrant like R&C colours usually are, so it's a bit less visible than, say, bright gold on bright red.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chinara In reply to Introcrat [2011-03-10 22:17:23 +0000 UTC]

XD As good as they are, they are open spots to be attacked by others still.
[... PFAH! I insist on you being simply perceptive. XD]
It is hard to resist cute these days... XD But there is a certain limit of cute that I can't take anymore, still.
... Hm. True, the colors are muted. ... I didn't notice at all though while working on it. XD it looked awfully bright to me. And well, I was thinking about making the blood appear dried, at least slightly. I assume blood dries after some hours.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Introcrat In reply to chinara [2011-03-12 06:35:39 +0000 UTC]

True, but you shall live a happier life than those who are unapproachable and distant.
(Now you're trying too hard to be generous. Surely others have noticed this as well, even if they have not mentioned it.)
Cute on the Internet is something that one cannot avoid. XD But you end up with a lot more if you enjoy it and seek it out.
Too much time in a muted world, perhaps? Winter is a rather dull season. The dried nature of the blood is perfectly fine, and it's done well - in my experience, blood usually dries within 45 minutes. Not that I'd have much experience. <_< >_>

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chinara In reply to Introcrat [2011-03-18 19:11:38 +0000 UTC]

A happier life in the shadow of deception and exploitation, I beg to differ.
[I hardly doubt stating my point of view leads to exaggerated generosity. XD]
True XDDD It's inevitable to be confronted with it. But sometimes, really sometimes... It's too much.
I was actually working with such colors ever since working on ShellShock pictures. XD The vibrant colors are very much muted every time if you were to take the pick tool and pick the color, that is.
... e-e You should really watch out for yourself, really.

Introcrat In reply to chinara [2011-03-19 04:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Then we shall just have to try to make you suspicious and cynical as well as open and approachable. It will be interesting to see if the traits can co-exist. XD
[It does when your view happens to be complimentary.]
Fortunately, the Internet also has a variety of things that are horrific and definitively un-cute, so if you overload on cuteness there is something to counter it. XP
Interesting choice. People usually go for rather vivid colouration in fanfiction pieces.
In what way? With blood? It's OK, I've only got... four open wounds on my body right now. And two of have dried blood that's about that colour.

[But I can't help it! D: That's how my view is.]
XDDD True! There is always something to make you crave for cute all of a sudden again.
Well, there are some exceptions. XD; like this one here, I just wanted it muted, because it is simply the mood of not only that scene, but the whole fanfiction. Of course, there are more fluff Fics than anything out there, so... >>
.................... How do you manage to injure yourself so much? x8

Introcrat In reply to chinara [2011-03-27 00:30:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure if we use enough Kierkegaard, it can be done. XP Irony will be necessary.
Perhaps, though I confess that I personally haven't craved cute since... ever, really. XD
An excellent choice, then, considering the majority of fanfiction. Good that you don't make more of the useless fluff.
Knives, mostly, and using them sloppily when cooking. And a couple of unfortunate but mild errors near a construction site. Nothing serious. All mostly healed by now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chinara In reply to Introcrat [2011-03-27 02:36:21 +0000 UTC]

XD Kierkegaard? Are you certain? I know that irony is necessary to leap from the first into the second stage, but other than that...
XDDD Well, you are a guy, after all. I wouldn't have assumed that you'd have great longing after cute anyway.
I have to confess, though, that there are some fluffy scenes in the fanfiction. XD; Even though those are mostly melancholic.
.................. You should really watch out. ._. If it's cooking, you can avoid these wounds! Hands are precious. They enable writting communication. So watch out for them!

Well, an earnest person can't be both suspicious/cynical and open/approachable, so you would have to distance yourself from yourself, wouldn't you?
Cute is rarely something that I don't have enough of. Mainly because it doesn't take very long for me to get enough of it. XP Still, it has its uses.
Well, having a few scenes of that nature is acceptable. (And from you, expected. XD)
I can avoid those wounds, but I often find myself with not enough time to cook, so I rush things. Besides, the wounds are minor. Nothing that needs bandaging. My hands are more than used to a bit of abuse. XP

Hm... Well reasoned. Except if said person obtains a split personality or becomes extremely bipolar. But I digress.
XDDD Well, you are a man, after all! But out of curiosity, what is your absolute limit of cute?
Aceeptable it is, and somehow welcome. [WHAT? Expected? XDD My dear friend, if you knew my writing, you'd know that I am terrible at anything that is similar to fluff. I try to avoid it to an extreme extent since I'd rather have broken characters than happy-dappy ones.]
... There's the safer variety of instant noodles... Diverse prepared meals in the market for a decent price... and most importantly which don't involve the danger of CUTTING YOURSELF ARGH >👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Introcrat In reply to chinara [2011-04-01 06:42:22 +0000 UTC]

I'll grant you that, but I think we can assume that you're not going to develop a split personality or severe bipolar tendencies on purpose. Unless you really want to. And even then, I don't think you can, unless you take a great deal of highly illegal narcotics.
My absolute limit of cute? As in the amount of cute required before I flee in terror? Well, it used to be roughly 12.6 Ktn of cuteness (Ktn, short for Kitten, being the universal standard measurement of cuteness, like the gram or litre.) After a certain incident in Japan, however (which I will never speak of,) it has been forcibly and radically increased to 6.338 MKtn (megakittens, or millions of kittens.) Since cute above 7 KKtns (kilokittens) has existed only in laboratory conditions, I am for all intents and purposes immune to cuteness. XP
(Well, I haven't read much of your fluff, but that would make sense, at least seeing as you seem to avoid it with characters like Kraz. But regardless of your ability to write it, you seem like someone who would naturally gravitate towards having a bit of it. Broken characters, though, are far more interesting than vapidly happy ones.)
I've eaten more than my share of instant noodles, madam, and once in a while I long for more complicated dishes. XD My hands thank you for your concern, but it's not necessary - I have an unfortunate tendency to treat certain objects of mine... clumsily, let us say, and my hands are two such objects, but fortunately they have grown accustomed to it and are perfectly fine with minor injuries. They're quite wound-free at the moment, for example, except for a particularly deep paper cut, and that doesn't really count.
