I think it may be easier to explain this in a livestream, where I can show you things visually instead of attempting to explain them. Would you be able to do that?

Hi there, I'm wondering if you can help me. I have ZERO experience in Sai, I just know Photoshop. I'm a big fan of how does his pinup women and how shiny their skin and other surfaces are.

Do you know any methods in Photoshop for doing such techniques? Or who I might ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chiroyo In reply to darkside-ky [2012-03-08 01:16:00 +0000 UTC]

Hmm from looking at his work, I would say that it appears he just paints the highlights on with a soft, lower-opacity brush? Additionally, I think he may be using a tool similar to photoshop's dodge tool to make that "bright shiny" effect on the edges of his highlights and some of his lines. This sort of effect can usually be achieved by painting highlights with the dodge tool set alternatively between "midtones" and "highlights" (highlights will make it much brighter and whiter). This is just my take on this, however. If you want, you could probably ask him and I'm sure he'd be happy to answer. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for, in terms of an answer, and if it isn't, please feel free to elaborate or rephrase. I hope my answer was helpful ;u;

darkside-ky In reply to Chiroyo [2012-03-08 04:03:30 +0000 UTC]

I've tried that technique you described, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect of "shaping" subject matter as it does his work.

That is to say, his techniques cause his compositions to look more three-dimensional, so I dunno what I'm missing exactly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chiroyo In reply to darkside-ky [2012-03-08 06:00:38 +0000 UTC]

Well generally in the making of things 3-dimensional, there are more than just highlights going into play, I think. Could you perhaps show me an example of your work that tries to use this? Three-dimensional often also relies on perspective and the presence of different parts of the body in different perspective planes, as well as the other shading aside from the highlights. Maybe you could elaborate on the "shaping" you're curious about?

darkside-ky In reply to Chiroyo [2012-03-08 06:35:20 +0000 UTC]

Okay for starters: [link]

The things I noticed most about Reiq's piece is that around the breasts and abdomen there is this almost exaggerated amount of shiny "depth". Like it's a latex surface. But not just that, if you look at the gauntlets around the hands and the metal plating around the hips, there's this sense that the light source is "guilded steel" besides. I'm at a loss as to how he does either of those methods for lighting. Besides the fact I have next to no idea how to draw natural breasts like he does, or erotic poses for that matter.

Anyways, if you look: [link]

My sense of depth tends to feel rushed and flat. Another example is this: [link] there's barely any shading done, just enough that it's obvious.

Here again: [link] I seem to have a better sense of glow than I do of shadows in that piece, but the way it's colored isn't very deep either. It doesn't "pop" out at you.

Also the fact I don't have a tablet to use and rely on a mouse instead seems to hinder my use of brushes in Photoshop, since I can't exactly use the "Pen Pressure" function. I want my brush strokes to start thin, then get thicker and go thin again (like natural strokes would). I would like help with this too, since all I seem to be able to do is get a brush to fade out instead of "fade in then out".

Chiroyo In reply to darkside-ky [2012-03-09 20:54:42 +0000 UTC]

hmm...well. as for the latex surface, I think if you imagine this in a 3-D way, and the light source seems to be cast mostly from the top-down, but angled towards the front, then the light is hitting those areas the most harshly. To make it kind of latex-y, he's using kind of a "blob" of bright highlights instead of making it subtle, so it stands out and helps define the texture. I think to make the metal look more realistic, he adds "scratches" with a small brush of different shades of grey.
As for the breasts and poses, buddy, I'm a girl and I have no idea how to do either of those 8'D trololol.

Well yours just looks flatter because your coloring style mostly involves sharp, flat colors. The guy you're trying to imitate uses a lot of soft shading with brushes, and yours is kind of just flat colors with something that resembles cel-shading. I would be careful with the colors that you are using for shading. Rather than just using a darker/more saturated hue than the flat color for shading, try to use a color that is not only darker, but perhaps a slightly different color as well. (for example, when shading skin, don't just use a darker skin color, try using some pinkish tones too). In addition to that, try considering adding more context in the background rather than just a simple scheme of colors (I'm not too good at this myself, but yeah).

Ohhh you use a mouse? That's still quite impressive, though, for using a mouse :3 IF you can, I would invest in a small tablet, like maybe a wacom bamboo, though. You can't really do pen pressure with a mouse, squat unforunately D:

okay...one q&a:

how do you CG something?

Chiroyo In reply to queenofgoth [2011-08-20 23:05:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm a little confused by your question o.o But if you wanted a written description, then my answer is sketch it, outline it, then color it in with different colors on different layers.

Really nice tutorial! Your colouring is splendid. Its something that i need to really brush up on. Also an excellent job in reminding us that LineArt is just as important as the colouring itself. I totally agree!
However just like to point out some small things that can be improved on (me being the nosy perfectionist that i am, so feel free to ignore me when i get too nosy!)

The character's face shape in relation to her neck and body can be improved on. The head and neck area look oddly disjointed, even for a chibi character. Her shoulder proportion is also a tad bit odd, with one shoulder higher than the other at an irregular angle and her collar bones at a rather awkward position.

Well other than my nosy nitpicking (sry! ) everything else (especially the colouring! Man! I really should practise more...) Is gorgeous. Hopefully you'll find my comments helpful and continue to produce lovely artworks.

Chiroyo In reply to LeQueen [2010-08-06 22:13:13 +0000 UTC]

haha, thank you =3 I have always had problems with proportions, and probably always will >8O
thanks for taking the time to give such a long comment lol XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LeQueen In reply to Chiroyo [2010-08-06 22:22:28 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem! I myself would always like to recieve observations from other artists, so i figured if i helped out other ppl maybe one fine day someone would do the same for me too! Lol.

Haha i was terrible with proportions too! Still having trouble in fact. But i suppose practising really helped and i'm planning to create a basic anatomy and proportions tutorial in the near future which (hopefully) anyone can understand.

In any case it was not a problem at all! It must have taken you WAY longer to make that tutorial than for me to type out a couple of simple observations. Great effort and keep it up!
