Hmmmm.... Vessel (I think by quite a bit) .... But I think I need to start looking at real trees.... These both were just made letting the patterns pile up organically with the idea of a tree in my head someplace..... But when I looked at an actual tree the other day it was so much more unique.....
The only thing I worry about is drawing from life and adding patterns like zip-a-tone looks kinda cheap..... So I think I need to draw a few trees, observation style (sans patterns.... ) and then come back to the fantasy trees with new experiences.
This one is weird for me because it has leaves.... I usually just like branches.
...and sadly ...I drew this one because I kind of wanted a replacement for vessel.... After scanning vessel I kept working on it ..... And I did not like where it went....so the file here is kind of a phantom.
But Hilltop tree Was not the replacement I wanted.... I should know better ... It has its' charms.... But it doesn't feel the same at all..... It is quirky but not epic.... Vessel felt closer to epic.... Maybe not epic but stoic and strong .....this guy is a goofball

I agree that Vessel is the stronger form, but Hilltop has tons of personality. I think they work really well without backgrounds, being themselves so intricate in detail and texture. I like to see the roots. They remind me of something I read about a pagan temple, which had at the centre a large circular pit where a tree rested upside down with its roots waving in the air. Celebrants gathered round the tree and took its roots into their hands, symbolizing a passage into the underworld.
Maybe some drawing from life would be good, I don't know; sure there's no harm in trying it, though there is something rather magical about growing your own chobek-tree, on a piece of paper, using only your ink, pen, hand, eye and brain...
