Even the tough love from the anime can trace its roots back to an old trope. As seen in classic films like Gone With The Wind, "the romantic slap" crossed over into Japanese culture and has become an accepted part of its backdrop, specifically in anime.

Go here [ [link] ] & under the questionable bolded heading, "Muting Romance and Erasing Sexuality". It clearly explains how SatoKasu was actually meant in the anime itself, before 4kids even started to ad more of their uniquely Americanized moments.

No. 4Kids STILL edited in its OWN American-made AAML moments (ex: the songs [Misty's Song, Under the Mistletoe, He Drives Me Crazy, et al], some dialog--such as the marriage joke in Heartbreak of Brock--and the ENTIRE concept of Melody teasing Misty within the Pokemon 2000/The Power of One/Revelation Lugia film).
I was merely saying that "the romantic slap" was one of the SatoKasu moments taken OUT, because of cultural differences. Another such example is when Kasumi has a nightmare. In the US version, BOTH Brock and Ash are present within Misty's dream, but in the Japanese version, Kasumi's scream of "Satoshi!" clearly implies that she was thinking of the supposed Pokemon Master BY HIMSELF and it's thus assumed that it was her subconcious' way of telling her that she NEEDS him!
But since most of the other AAML hints were left seemingly unchanged or were additions specifically made by 4kids, it would seem like AAML would be here to stay, with the hankie--an INTERNATIONAL "symbol of love"--and that special fishing lure (as a nod to the first episode where Kasumi fishes Satoshi and Pikachu out from the lake) as definable proof of such.

For easier viewing, I've cut the main portion regarding SatoKasu. The link to the edit can be found here [ [link] ].
